Cordless Impact Wrenches

What do you want to do with it?

Several jobs lined up for it:

Audi A8 wheel hub bolt and crankshaft pulley bolt, both tightened to 200Nm + 180deg
Plus I'm currently restoring a Triumph GT6, the chassis with running gear is currently on its side and it's a pain trying undo rusted bolts whilst stopping the chassis tipping.

Saw my family today we have just killed our half inch Milwaukee impact took four years of abuse tho so it will be replaced soon we'll it still works just rattles alot sounds like the motor is gunna detonate soon

It derives it's 'power' from being able to lever against an adjacent point. Some of the one's I saw for sale (And on Youtube) have a round end on the fulcrum contact point - which seems really strange, as it's going to slip easily.

It won't do for everything, but it's another tool in the armoury, to complement the impact wrench, and breaker bar!

Beanwood, no problem, thanks for the link, I usually travel around carrying around a 450mm 1/2" and a 600mm 3/4" breaker bar with a converter to use 1/2" sockets for "stubborn" nuts, anything more and I reckon it would just snap the bolt/nut off. Judging by that size of that kit, I think I will stick to breaker bars. In my shed it may come in handy but I seriously doubt it, if I was doing heavy machinery in the field, then yes it would be a possibility, but back in the shed I would most like use a heavy air impact gun. Then there is always the pipe extension for those extra stubborn nuts.

As an aside for home use I bought a 240v corded Makita impact driver to build my sheds , changed the lead to a 6 metre long flexible rubber one 120nm torque, dear little thing , brilliant tool if you don't mind the cord , wacked in 110 mm screws effortlessly,

I have a few battery rattle guns including a snapon 3/8" drive but they are all old hat and very underwhelming in comparison to stuff like Eds (@sako243 ) Milwaukee. Being a tightwad I cant bring myself to part with the money to embrace the Milwaukee system so will stick with air for the moment , the new 3/4" drive leccy nut gun does sound the bizz though

Shows how much technology has come along - if it is the above then it's capable of 1800Nm. The impact I've got is 1356Nm, last year they brought out a 3/4" drive one at 1627Nm.

But... end of this year they're bringing out a special Bob edition impact wrench (apologies about the preacher style of the video). Club together with the family and get it for your birthday?

With respect to the OP @daedalusminos - I'd recommend Milwaukee as that's what I've got. The little 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" drives are a bit old hat now so all respectable brands have it pretty much nailed for the home / semi-professional user so I don't think you'll go wrong with Milwaukee / Dewalt / Makita / etc.

The thing I'd look at is the range of tools and see what you're after. Milwaukee initially targeted the automotive industry so have a wide range of tools there, they then targeted construction and so on. (They seem to improve a few tools and then target a new market each year with new tools). Makita appears to have targeted the more DIY end of the market and Dewalt appeared to have targeted construction first.

To be honest I was a Makita person but I've had Milwaukee tools for about 5 or 6 years now because at the time I had an opportunity to use the M18 1/2" impact at a garage and was blown away by it at the time. There was nothing comparable cordless at the time so bought one and subsequently now bought into the battery technology.

The things that were a bit annoying is they've been slow to bring out a chainsaw and "garden" implements compared to other manufacturers but I can survive with that.

Nice gear Ed but the numbers are one thing and suitability another, while the big guns cordless can do the numbers it can’t take the pace. They will undo a few truck wheel nuts but I have witnessed them not getting around one wheel on a fully charged battery let alone twelve First few nuts are ok but as the battery drops off so does the power, come six weekly checks and there’s a hundred and twenty nuts to waz on and off with just one rig, the cordless would be on its **** in five minutes. So for the moment it’s big air or petrol for truck nuts until they take another leap forward on battery tech, and they will.

i bought the latest draper 1/2" impact gun on advice from someone on here for throwing into the back of the jeep for my rally car on events in case my milwaukee got broken/stolen etc.
i have to say its fantastic for under 150quid. think it was 120 with one battery or 149 with 2!

I find your experience surprising. I don’t do wagons but tractors and trailers have plenty of very tight nuts, with a decent battery I never seem as though it’s not enough to do most jobs on a charge.

I’ve heard of people doing a full set of pads on crawler tracks on a single charge, and that was a while ago before 9ah and bigger batteries were available.
