Cordless grinder

I've said it before here many times
I'm running half my DeWalt batteries made by Florien (spelling?)
Been Using them for 3 or 4 years now and there still holding their own against the genuine

Il be buying a flexvolt grinder next.

Already have a flexvolt 300mm mitre saw and tracksaw. Wouldn't know they were cordless in use.

It just takes one cell in one battery to explode at the wrong time and set your workshop on fire...
I know it can happen with genuine cells too, but I'd never ever forgive myself if it was just the cost of a cheap battery!

Yes. But there are varying degrees of quality within the field. I've seen some shocking looking gear.

Dewalts protection is in the tools.

Makitas is in the battery. That's one reason to exercise caution with Makita.

Makita and Milwaukee, Hilti and a few other makes battery protection fails safe 99.99% of the time, that's why their batteries are more likely to brick than some other makes. I see it as a positive for safety.
I do not like the idea of batteries without built in protection.

The 18V, brushed, Fakita mini chainsaw I think has died pushing it too hard. It let out magic smoke!

The 18V, brushed Fakita recip saw still going strong.

The latest 18V Fakita grinder is blue but I've barely used it so time will tell.

The first 18V Fakita grinder is still going strong and it's had some serious abuse at home and on site. I think it's because it's orange & not blue...

Running all these on genuine 5Ah batteries.

I've never bought fake batteries as I have a deep mistrust of cheap li-ion, even quality batteries go wrong in spectacular fashion, I couldn't take the risk of a battery exploding while charging when I'm not around.

And fake chargers....Samsung fake chargers 1 caught fire and one banged.

I have a Milwaukee Fuel grinder, been a good tool for the two plus years I have had it.
As with anything Milwaukee cordless it must be brushless and it must be Fuel.

Every DeWalt cordless tool I've ever owned is still working. Inc the old NiMH gear.



Other than the jigsaw. But it did get knocked out of a 1st floor window onto concrete.

Reliable enough for me.

Never planned to go DeWalt but got gifted a drill and jigsaw when I first started and never saw a reason to change

I really like the handle on the DeWalt dcg412N. It takes a little getting used to but I think there's a lot more control with this design...I generally don't have a side arm fitted when doing car stuff. With the DeWalt there's less chance of the body spinning if it kicks on something Vs my mains Bosch.

I don't leave anything on charge if I'm not using it or there to take it off when it's full, not even my phone. Grandson had an iPhone blow up charging in the kitchen, battery expanded and screen hit the ceiling.

In the garage I leave my batteries on charge overnight but my chargers and batteries live in a metal cabinet so less of a problem/risk. I have a couple 6AH "fake" batteries...I use them for my work lamp and for that they're fine. Usually the cells inside can't handle high current draw but for a lamp they do fine (wouldn't use em on a grinder though!).

I think the dewalt battery cells are specifically rated for high current drain...when I googled the code on the cells the Samsung "25R" seemed to relate specifically to deep cycle. The "fake" cells I imagine aren't fake they're just standard cells.

Depends on the copy. Some will be decent cells.

Some are a rip off and out to make easy profit.

I used to use 25r in my vape sticks. Or Samsun vc5 all about the C

I ended up getting a used makita one, it’s brilliant tbf
It only came with one 5.0 battery tho
Does anyone have a recent link to any reasonable inauthentic batteries?

Inauthentic batteries are prone to failure and fire
Screwfix doing the basic drill, charger and 2x 5ah batteries for £130 ..when the batteries are usually £50 -£ 60 each

Don't think I've ever used the side handle on my Makita grinder. Recently gone for a Bosch 18V which has anti-kickback & drop failsafes.

Beat value one including battery and charger please?

Best value and best grinder are two different things, the aldi grinder,charger and the 40v batteries are good value but not a patch in terms of quality compared to something like a Milwaukee.

Indeed...for car work I really like the trigger on the Dewalt...and the handle fits your hand instead of just being round so when I pick it up my brain immediately knows where the spinny thing is in relation to my fingers.

My Bosch mains grinder has a stupid push switch on the side...it's too far up for my thumb so I have to switch it on and then shuffle my hands about...it's just asking for trouble especially with gloves on (maybe that's where I'm going wrong !)

I recently took a punt on a pair of fakita batteries from an eBay seller (£45 for two) “6.0 amp”.
One went faulty so got a refund and they didn’t want the dead one back.
Issue was that it still worked but wouldn’t charge.

So, I opened it up and found there was a thin sensor wire detached (temp maybe??), soldered it back on and battery is now perfect.

However, the capacity is bogus. Cells are 18650 3.7v marked with “2ah”.
10x3.7x2 / 18. = 4.1ah
No wonder they don’t last as long as my genuine Makita 5.0amp batteries !(but a third of the price)
