Cordless Fence Post Augers

Does anyone have one?
If so is it any good?
I have a big to be fence job to do and am thinking it could be handy.
I dont really want a petrol one as it will not be used that often.

My petrol one has been great, apart from some running issues when new. I dont imagine I will be doing any more fences, so its taking up space. It has always fired up no problems. Ideally needs a new cylinder and piston kit (44-F) but my attempts to find a good quality one have failed, however replacment engines are quite cheap. It still has acceptable compression..
The engine is the same as generic 52cc 2 strokes, so could have second duty as a grass trimmer/polesaw etc..

Makita do an XGT cordless auger but it looks to spin too fast for an 8" bit! quite expensive for a single job.

That said, I thought mine span quite slow. I know the reduction gearbox is 16:1 so its likely about 400rpm.

The NZ website has more detail. 1.35kw, so about half the power of the 52cc. Its probably enough but I suggest it could do with half the rotation speed and double the torque. I dont like that it uses a drill chuck!
I do like that it has reverse.

I'd buy a cheap petrol powered unit and just run it out of fuel when you've finished with it each time.....

Yes, cordless tools are a premium particually the higher power ones.

Petrol is the way to go. This is mine, in hard clay with lots of roots.

I have that same drill ^^^ HF has them at around $200 presently, comes with a 6" auger, they sell an optional 8".
I see similar for ice fisherman that have a 1 lb propane bottle on them, if the speed is the same (Ice augers maybe turn faster ?), might be a better choice for long term storage than petrol.

They might use a tank for the 2T oil and a pump unit, a bit like the old Suzuki 2T bikes of the 70's/80's.....

I bought a petrol one to do 40 posts, best decision I've ever made by the end of it!.

You can drain them down afterwards or us Aspen Alkylate long life fuel.

Some years ago I hired a petrol driven auger for my decking. It worked fine until it hit a rock or tree root and then the pilot gets spun round like a top out of control. Moral: Beware more power!!
