Cordless chainsaws. Anyone know about them?

Nobody's mentioned ppe yet.
Just like welders there's a pile of ppe to buy. Cut proof boots, leggings and gloves also hard hat with visor. Not sure about the need for earmuffs with electric but I would. Will double your budget at a guess

The biggest problem with battery is it does not cut as quick as petrol and can get stuck if you try cutting too thick and you can't use horse power to withdraw chain. One stopped it needs starting in free air whereas a good petrol saw can cut from standstill.

I bought a sthil battery a while back, was sick of two stroke saws being left with petrol in them, having to mix up two stroke then spending half an hour getting them running for a couple of cuts.... Brilliant tool TBH what I do pruning where a 360 wont, and chopping railway old hardwood sleepers for landscaping and other rubbish ideal haven't started the petrol saw since, also bought the strimmer and hedge cutter that uses the same battery's, all quite reasonable for sthil stuff once you have the batterys.

re the muffs of check the dB rating. The strimmer I got from Lidl today is 96 - definitely ear defender territory.

As far as the other points, I think it’s a technique thing. If you’re getting the bar / chain stuck it’s due to either tension or compression. Either which way you shouldn’t be using power to free it, even with a petrol saw. You’ll damage the chain or bar.

if it’s getting stuck cutting from the top down then the wood is in compression. You need to bore through at the bottom to relieve it then either cut up with a pushing chain (top of bar) or down from the top of the log to meet the first cut.

The saw should always be introduced to the wood running.

I'd pick up a little petrol chainsaw personally. The smallest Husky is about £120. There are Stihl and Husqvarna offerings sub £200 that are fine for occasional use. I have a Husky 135 as my small saw - i am sure I paid £165 but cant find it for less than £225 tonight.

I have a Stihl 44 for the big stuff. Did part of an Elm with 3ft limbs and it coped fine with that.

ETA - I dont know what I do differently to others but I never have problems with stale fuel, the machines usually start fine. Carb rebuilds arent exactly taxing but arent often needed.

I have a Husqvarna 135 bought for £179 and a Stihl 044, 036 and the MS460 all bought as projects it gets addictive.
I use Aspen2 so no fuel problems.

I know. I have to stop myself too. I rebuilt the 044. Its an older model with the 10mm piston pin so slightly trickier to find parts. Runs sweet with its new piston.

i have the 036 lovely saw to use, used to have a 075 that I could never get running, I sold it wish I hadn’t.

To be honest an ms170 or ms180 would do more than you need. Cheaper than cordless too probably

Its the sister company from Copenhagen There are certain words spell check loves to change.

Iv used the Aspen fuels and they do work, However like alo of cordless tools to go off and do odd jobs without buggering about with fuel or cables, means a five minute job does take that, As long as youve left the chain sharp and the batterys in the charger

I dont know what saw you are using but can tell you mine will cut the same speed as a petrol saw if that saw is from the same kw range.
You cant compare a 2kw battery saw with a petrol saw that has more power.
Compare it to one of the same kw's & the performance will be the same.

When you say cut to thick, what is too thick?
I run a 16" bar & can cut that full depth to cut up to 32".

It is true that you do need a different technique.
Bat saws use chain speed more than low rpm grunt.
So you do need to pay attention to the chain condition more than a petrol saw.
You dont let the saw bog down, you keep chain speed high & she will fly through the wood & use less bat power.

As mentioned above if you are getting stuck in a cut its not the saw it you not reading the wood (tension / compression) correctly.
