Many older lathes have the travelling steady too close to the tool post because when the lathe was designed either lantern toolposts or 4-way toolposts were the norm.
I think that's the issue with the Boxford travelling steady: it ends up on the wrong side of the tool.
I bought a fixed steady as one didn't come with my VSL and (as you should) I let the one for my AUD go with the lathe when I sold it.
Alas despite it being claimed to be for the 5" centre height VSL it's actually a 4.5" model Boxford steady, which I only realised some months after I'd bought it.
It does work, but only over a limited range.
