Copy Turning?

Ok Chaps. I've just aquired a new toy. Well new to me anyway. It's a Colchester lathe and it has a hydraulic copy turning attachment on the back. TBH I can't really see myself using it but before I take it off I thought I'd at least see what it can do! Only problem is I haven't the foggiest how to use it! Any clues greatly received.

I've got Manuals for Bantam 2000 and Student MK 2 (square head).
I'm not sure if it's included,I'll have to dig them out.
Did you get the Taper Turning attachment with it? Much more usefull.

Hi Guys,

Although the last time i used one was years and years ago, this is the basic principle. A template is made up which creates the profile for the copy unit to follow. which is then fixed to the copy unit at the rear of the machine. The cross slide lead screw is 'effectively' disengaged so the hydraulics then take control of Y motion so the profile can be be created when the saddle is traversed along its motion.

If you now take a look at the machine armed with that info you should be able to figure it out, they are pretty basic bits of kit.

Cheers Scott. The place I got it from said pretty much the same but and though the principal makes perfect sense I'm still a little bewildered as to exactly how to operate it!

Yes that's the MK2. Square flat top on gearbox,and coloured segments around change levers.

To be honest if you wanted to turn a taper using a copy turning unit all you need to do is set up a straight bar at the required angle and get the copy unit to follow it.

To add to what Scott said, although I have'nt seen the copy attachment, the possible use of mounting a milling cutter in the lathe jaws and a workpiece in the toolpost and following a template...low budget copy mill (thanks Dad)

If you can take some half decent pics of your particular unit i will be able to guide you through the process and basic principles. Once you figure what does what and for what reason it will become clear to you.

Hi Archie,
As Scott said a basic but Very versatile bit of kit, with quick change tooling mine repeats to +/-.001.
You can produce shafts that are:- stepped, multi grooved, tapered, multi tapered, coned, waisted, concave, convex, etc & depending on your machine setup, most/all of that across a face.

Templates can be from flat sheet mounted to copy table or a turned "master" mounted between centers.

Some time ago I had to replace a snapped gearbox shaft that had, 4 dia's ,3 locating shoulders, several cir-clip groves, & a short taper & thread @ one end.
A bas**d job in a "normal" lathe but easy peasy with the copy attachment.

1 - clamp original up as straight as poss,
2 - tack weld a piece of angle over snap
3 - fill thread with body filler
4 - put between centers in lathe & bump till running true
5 - move it to copy centers
6 - make new shaft. (BTW you only ever need to measure 1 dia )

Saved hrs + no muti measuring no measuring & setting of taper

Though I'll have to move the lathe if I decide I want to leave it on. Wasn't concentrating and put the splash guard on in the forward position which doesn't leave enough room for the cross-slide to move all the way across when the attachment is fitted. Now of course the thing is nicely levelled up with its back against the wall and I can't move the guard back without bringing the lathe forward!

I would have had the Triumph of them but they weren't getting rid of it. Now they are. Perhaps it's best I didn't. Moving this one was painful enough!!!

I learnt on one of these too. And a Triumph. Or was it a Mascot, can't remember! Noisy they are and this one seems a little noisier flat out than I remember. Probably had a bit more use but it seems in pretty good shape. Uni having a bit of a clearout: £600.

is it on colchester triumph 2000? iv'e been after one for ages. If you want to get rid i would be interested
