Hi All , many moons ago i heard / read that if you want to fill in a small hole in mild steel with a mig welder then if you placed a copper bock behind the hole, then the mig wont stick to the copper but will enable you hold the mig weld pool in to be able to fill the hole (i am restoring a old rally car that has had many holes drilled in it for pop rivets) - trouble is where do I buy such a piece of copper from (the size of a small panel beating dolly i suppose)? I am in the essex /london area. I also wonder if flattening a piece of copper pipe would be ok or do i need a larger piece to act as a heat sink?...Could i use aluminium instead maybe as that might be easier to source for me.
thx
