Converter help.

Will this type of converter be suitable for use with a MIG?

I read in the instructions that it is not suitable for stop start use.

Seen more robust looking units on ebay that may be more suitable, but how will i know if they are suited for use with welders?


Is there any other way around using my 3 phase from the house?

That is a static phase converter, only for motors and will give reduced torque.

Only a rotary converter can be used. It moight be possible to use it with a 3-phase motor of sufficient power.

As a 2HP converter, that is 1.5kw, so that is about a 90A MIG.

It`s worth just checking to see how available a 3 phase supply is to you. It`s turned out my old house had a 3 phase supply to it (well, to a big box on the side of the house anyway) and where I am now I know it`s not to difficult. The money comes when you need your provider to connect it up over distance. I know one bloke who was charged 8k just to have a trench dug to put the cable in, but not even covered (or connected up)

Jay i would prefer a converter so i can use this welder at home too as well as at work, there is no 3 phase at my home.



So would something like this be ok? The HP isnt enough though is it?

The welder is a ProSpot 190 MIG.. so i assume the converter may have to be double the HP so a 3hp?

That is a static converter. as Said, you need a rotary converter.

190A if probably around 5kw or near 7HP.

I can see this getting quite expensive if bought new 725 quid. Maybe i would be better off buying a 240v welder for home use and leaving the 3 phase purely for work from the unit.
