Convert my Rayburn to a rocket stove.

Is that just because everything is going up or because something is happening with supply? We've just shifted a solid fuel rayburn to install!

Welsh pit closing, can still get foreign rubbish, and other types of solid fuel, but price by this winter who knows?

Our Rayburn was the only new thing we could afford to buy in the first five years after buying our house for £7.500 46 yrs ago.

Cost £350 less trade discount £100, it's served us well, only on it's 3rd set of fire bricks, 2 new grate wheels and I've just made a 3rd ash pan for it.

Back then it was hardly ever let out, not alight 4 summer months nowadays proof that global warming is real!

Well admittedly I'm talking twenty years ago, when a bag of anthracite was £3.50 and my wife was younger, etc...

I've a gas Rayburn sitting in thé barn, glad I didn't install that, shame, perfect enamel, why do I own three Rayburns and an Aga, I ask myself ?

look up a gasifier as it burns the gas from wood if you have a lot of wood

Decent coal is becoming a major concern amongst the steam people. Another casualty of not being able to get cheap stuff from the east

I had to laugh when a Steam man on TV said loosing Welsh steam coal would make it very hard for them to meet their carbon neutral targets in the future!

it really does depend on access you have and what your willing to do for the adaptions

I seem to recall ours was about £9k about 30 years ago! I might do a Dibnah and dig my own mine - although arsenic or tin is most likely what I will find down here!!

Questions I would be asking; what are the current burn temperatures and what do you expect to raise them to? If it's a lot higher than the design temp, will you be able to reliably insulate the burn chamber in the space available? It should burn more efficiently, so you'll need a physically smaller burner, which might help squeeze it in place but might make feeding it an issue?

I convert an OF7 to electric resistance heat in the summer (it's a glorified plate warmer/clothes drier) there's not a lot of space in there!

In my old farmhouse we had a Rayburn. Used coal for 1 month. Then switched to pallet blocks. Unlimited supply for me.
Wood burns hotter than coal. Hardly any ash. A carrier bag full a week vs a wheelbarrow of clinker.
Only drawback is you have to stoke it a lot more.
I would have loved to convert mine to oil. I now have an oil fired AGA. Love it. So much easier!

Cost of oil vs free wood.... no contest for me there fizzy. Our boilers already drain the oil tank sufficiently well without adding another 'leak'!

many of the old ones can be modified it all depends on what the owners want to do with them

if your trying to modify whats there already you will be pushing it

its like trying to fit this into your aga, esse and rayburn



note the firebox is 9"x9"x9" then a burn channel before the riser of 500mm

yet your trying to fit all of that into a space of ash pan area and firebox area rough size 14"x 6"-7"x 14"H rough guess



can they be adapted yes its down to what you the owner is willing to do

since ive played with a rocket stove ive learnt alot of things

with a heat temp of around 700-1500f+ possible a good chance with coal

whilst the above stove can be dampened down ( there all roughly the same as they work by heating the hob plate up )

a rocket stove cant as all it will do is get hotter

so users be aware of this however it does conserve on burning wood as you start to burn the gasses of the wood

from the start up i can get 3 1/2 hrs out of one load of softwood

within the core you can hit temps of 2000f +

You're not alone..

Not long after moving out of our old farmhouse I went down with serious flu. This was at the time of the "Beast from the East". I reckon it would have killed me sorting wood out. Oil was so much easier. Now the price of kero has gone through the roof though I am back to burning as much wood as possible!

can i ask you to measure both the rayburn and aga ash box and firebox

please take out the grille

id like the measurements of depth from base of ash pan clean out, width and height to the hot plate if you would please

You're not alone..

simple answer it works with a firebox just below your hot plate

its also the reason why that hotplate can get stuck up with clinkers and black tar/creosote

it really heats direct to your chimney light the firebox across the hotplate then up the chimney

whilst this is a direct rocket ( straight up ) and also works by light firebox up to hot plate and then up the chimney

the rocket burns cleaner

its also why i have asked for measurements of both your ashpan area and also your firebox and models

i can find out if it has a boiler and where it is placed on your system there either at rear of the system or there a dual firebox and boiler in one

That Rayburn is way too sophisticated for me, ours only has a spin wheel and flue damper, nothing else.
