Convert my Rayburn to a rocket stove.

Well, thanks for your input chaps but summing it all up I don't think it's a goer.

I would be happy to stick up some solar panels and buy one of these:

I recently bought a 30amp aga which is a similar thing to the everhot. With the intention of converting it to charge up on excess solar/wind and top up on cheap electric.... However, removing it was a nightmare. It's an interesting idea but I don't want the hassle of rebuilding. Live and learn!

id like the measurements of the firebox

then i can really look at what you can do with them both aga and the rayburn

fireboxes are done by sizes but it dosnt mean you cant adapt it to the newer type

i know whats been written as ive read them all

but they removed what shouldnt have been removed or in there cases they made a heat store instead

Bought on eBay, has to be dismantled to move, unless you have heavy lifting equipment either end. It came apart ok but felt like a prototype, quite complex really and FULL of annoying insulation.

Currently palletised, awaiting my decision about what to do with it! Back on eBay I suspect

The only thing I can add is that cast iron stoves need to warm up slowly or they will crack, stone cold to "rocket" temp might not be a good idea.

the older styles of this stove didnt have secondary burn on them

but the newer style has the secondary air input



a seccondary air input can be fitted at the mouth or lower in the fire box

reference to the above rayburn

i dont know the firebox size or the mouth opening size or where it is on the rayburn so measurements is needed

the vortex is the wrong type to be used

ive created a rocket stove within a wood stove note the heat from the middle

that space is only 3"x 2 3/4" 3x2 planned wood is the gap front to back air input close to mouth ( not advisable but is possiblle )

the only other reference i have is this

so i know firebox is wide enough and that model has a removable hot plate, round plate so is possible to use as a rocket stove but that round plate might take alot of abuse and will burn out if a rocket type was used

i havent been given any info on the sizes so i cannot provide any sizes to use or build info

i will answer this for those that want to do a conversion then on esse or rayburns

you can using 316 stainless steel

this type works best on the round replaceable plate like the above video if not you are best doing a square cut and use a slot in type so you can do the above

this will allow full usage of the firebox whilst using the rocket stove method


it will have to be done in 2 pieces one that slots through the top and inserts into the piece below nearest the left wall of the rayburn / esse following the flow partern of flames
it will be a struggle to get it in one piece but could be done

the 3 wear points are the black squares best to use firebrick at these points

the bottom piece has 2 extending sides this is to keep the tube area unblocked the flames will go around it and up and over and down again well enoughand you can clean it out from the ash pan area

now some rayburns and esse have a boiler at rear of them and this will allow the heat within the firebox to still hit them and perform well enough ive clocked over 1000f just in the firebox with my 9x9 firebox on my rocket stove its really hot in that area

note the square in the middle this part must be sealed so use fire rope and bolt through the top plate to the underneath plate
this is to seal the top plate from the firebox

now primary air can be gained by the front door and slowed right down hence the reason why the firebox is sealed
you can use secondary air this is the blue colour best taken from the ashpan area piped up to the top and back down best to drill holes in the 5-10mm 316 stainless steel box and weld on tube or bolt on tube thats sealed to the box

any errors or not wide enough holes you can redrill them wider but not closest to the pipe

a special note here that removeable plate will take the brunt of the heat and is best checked and replaced
