continued sip130 wire and general welding problems!

Hi all,

Yet again can't get my sip130 to work! Very frustrated now. Ok first off wire feed issue ! Was told to change to .8 wire and tip to give better control. I previously practiced with .6 wire and tip and frankly seemed ok. Now with .8 tip and wire I can only weld with high current and very low speed. Is is possible sip130 only works well with .6 set up ! At lower currents previously I had good arc but rubbish penetration but it still worked. Now with .8 setup I cant get any kind of constant arc unless at full current! Can anyone she'd some light on this issue? Another problem I am getting is that the filler wire is now welding to the electrode tip! I really want to get this skill learnt but sip making it very difficult. The other thing I just remembered is the weld arc at lower currents was very inconsistent and the feed motor was extremely jittery.

yup they all do that jittery thing

look in the modification section there are some good easy to follow instructions - i went for the separate transformer for the feed as well as the essential - "steel liner new tips brace on the feed mech and a clean out of the gearbox" .
make sure all your connections are good and clean tight especially the ones on the big fat wires of the transformer
check also the state of your earth/return wire and clamp.
my 105 welds really nicely on low settings using agon mix rather than with co2 and i use .6 all the time for car stuff.

I think I will revert to .6 set up the feed motor never had an issue previously with that . I'm running a 95 argon/ 5 co2 so that should be fine. Just confused about the fact that mig won't weld at all at low current setting with .8 setup.

And by jittery I meant trigger pulled arc starts filler wire joins to metal and then arc stops andmotor stops and then half a second later it's starts again ? Not like buzzing jittery? Any idea.

Did you flip the feed roller for 0.8 from 0.6 ?
Stick a meter on the tip (with wire feed backed off) and other lead of meter to earth clamp and run through the power settings to see if you may have a voltage drop (poor connection) maybe ?

Wheel has been flipped and metal liner btw. How do I test voltage drop ?

Out of curiosity what watt are the resistors meant to be on main board?

If you note the readings from following my previous post then follow the earth clamp lead inside the machine to where it attaches (usually a bolted connection). Connect the lead you had on the earth clamp to this connection and do the voltage test again and note readings. they should be the same (+/- about 0.5v) if it is much better then you have a poor connection on your earth clamp or the connections going back into the machine. If it checks ok then do same for the other side namely the feed to the tip this should go back to the diode pack (ally plate device).
Ref the resistors they should be 1/4 watt unless other wise printed on device (usually there is a large one (white porcine type material) and may be 7 watt or greater. Some resistors have there power rating tied up with the colour coding
