Some CC machines can be adapted to CV. Usually with a limited range. I made an adapter for my Airco, I found it worked down to about 80A on the Airco mid range (20-220A). Below that, the 20A minimum was too high for short-circuit transfer. Switching to the 5-60A range was not high enough to start the arc.
It requires a welder with a low-current control voltage. Ones set by jumpers or sliding coils can not be adapted.
Similarly, a CC machine (arc/TIG) can be adapted to MIG using a voltage-sensing wire feeder. Still has a limited range.
MIG is CV for short arc (dip transfer), spray transfer can be CC.
TIG is CC
Arc is CC.

the adjustable voltage is the arc force and makes a helluva difference
The reason i want to know is that ive a separate wire feed unit that will go upto 400 Amps? and ive got an old oil filled ARC welder and wanted to know if i could build somthing to convert it to a mig,? as got all these bits but not got a mig welder thats any good,?..
Hate to disagree but MIG = CC with adjustable voltage, TIG/MMA = CV with adjustable current. Sorry

Bsmith then why are my MIG machines labled "Constant Voltage Poser Supply" and my TIG/ARC marked Constant current? My MIG power setting is in volts from 17 to 39V (continuously adjustable.) Current setting is never mentioned in the manual. It is all about V/I curves that are near flat. On the min setting it is 15V OCV and drops to zero around 400A. That is a V/I droop of about 0.0375V/A. Hardly CC.
TIG/MMA is usually a constant OCV but a programmable droop (I/V curve.)

Disagreement is your perogative, but you are wrong. In all but a few exceptional examples MIG is CV and TIG is CC.
