connecting my arc welder to my 5.5kw generator

Hi there

Hope you can help, I recently purchased a Neilson 65-250amp electric Arc welder, when it came there was no plug on it (im a novice) but it had the standard uk earth, live and neutral cables with little metal loops on the end of each, I'm hoping to connect this to my 5.5kw generator via a 3 pin plug? any advice would be appreciated as I do not want to just wire it to a plug without checking this is ok

I doubt if a 5.5 Kw genny, will run a 250 amp arc welder, what does the spec plate say on the welder????

i think but i could be wrong, that its the 5.5 kva jenny that will just cope with a 9 inch grinder ?:P

I would connect with one of them blue 16amp plugs and sockets. You won't be able to use anything like 250 amps welder output though, would think around 125 amps and even then the 5.5 kv genny will have a heavy load. If you can get a supply to run 250amps then fit a 32amp plug and socket.

i'm sorry! but your wrong! we've got a 1.5 kva genny and it will just power a slow start nine inch grinder but not for long as it over heats so i'd think you could run one constant on a 2kva genny.

Sorry too cazl, a decent 9" angle grinder uses about 2300 watts so 2 kva would be a trifle small. 3kva should be adequate.

Sounds about right, last place i worked had a 2.5 kva genny which would just about run a 2300w grinder, but wasn't happy with it for long spells.

5.5KVA give you 23.9A @ 230V doubt that will run the welder at much over half power

You can use a Fusion MA 130/160 amp inverter welders on a 5.0 Kva Genny, but for your 250 amp unit you'll need a 10 Kva Genny minimum.
