Confused???

I have just bought a mig and was after getting some gas. After doing a little bit of ringing roundi found that if i want BOC gas i have to become a registered member (this doesnt bother me).
My probem is that someone said in order to do so you have to have certificates to prove you can weld and they said something about have a certificate saying you can have gas in your garage etc.

Is this true or can i just buy some argoshield put it in my garage and weld away?

You only need to start an account to get a gas bottle off someone like BOC..you don't need any sort of welding certificates or anything like that.

There is this recent thread where BOC are offering a deal for hobby users, i think it might be finishing soon though.

I went to a local supplier. They give 6 month rental up front plust the gat. I took the bottle and got invoiced a couple of days later.

No regs , besides argon is inert so not as dangerous as you may think
although care must be taken with the pressure etc

inert gas is prob one of the most dangerous i would say, no smell, colour less and will kill you with ease.

yes i will not explode or catch fire, but it will still kill, i have hurd story's of welders killing them selfs by laying in a pipe full of argon.

Argon can be dangerous, no it wont ignite or blow up but it is an asphyxiant. If you are working in a pit under a car the gas will go into the pit as it is heavier than air. It can then displace all the air leaving you with nothing to breathe. But treated with a bit of common sense it is not dangerous. And just to let you know, some insurance companies don't take too kindly to you keeping high pressure gas bottles in your house or garage.
