confused about HVLP gun pressure

sorry to burst your bubble but cardboard is not a good practice medium as it absorbs the paint quickly, you need a non absorbent surface you could spray the exact amount of paint onto absorbent and non absorbent surface one would run the other wouldnt

well to be fair it's mostly going over already-dried paint on the cardboard, but I get your point, cheers

That's my primer gun, but the question was a general one.
My main gun is a HTE gun, which also isn't HVLP and might go in the LVLP category I suppose...

Aren't these "LVLP" / HTE guns closer to HVLP in spec than they are to traditional guns?

Dunno I only ever used non HVLP and HVLP, never needed to try them LVLP

same here and just alter the pressure down or up if its not rite if its 2 high it blows the paint away 2 low and it comes out slow and blobs

I don't mess with pressure, my gun says 2bar so just set to that. Leave fan open and adjust the fluid, but I have found that consistent speed of travel, distance from panel and correct overlap has as much bearing on finish quality as the gun settings,

I don't think LVLP is a properly recognised type of gun.

It's just the name they're calling it when the CFM requirement is lower, I think, but then this particular gun manufacturer (labeller) specifies the CFM as "4.5 - 6 cfm" at the bottom of the spec page, and at the top of the same page they specify it as 9cfm, which is still below HVLP (12cfm) but not by much.

The Iwata AZ3 HTE2 specifies 7.06cfm for the 1.3 gun (HTE type. They also make a HVLP type which is 12cfm).

Your Air Gunza is what they call a compliant gun as it will put more of the paint on the panel to what the older high pressure guns would have or so they say, I have the HTE2 as well but prefer the 1.5 tip though.

The way I set my gun (I am a novice) is to open the air control on the gun fully, set the pressure on the gun gauge to 35psi, screw the fluid control out two and 1/2 turns and then set the fan to a hand span at a hand span distance.

Yes the HVLP guns consume a lot of air but have little overspray, I have a large compressor so never had to use them, but if they were any good I would of thought you would of seen them being used everywhere ???

Did some primer-surfacer/filler spraying earlier and it went on pretty well with the increased pressure. The 10mm rubber hose is a bit cumbersome though.

The 10mm rubber hose is a bit cumbersome though.[/quote make a quarter bore hose up 3 meters long and fit on the end of your 10 mm bore pipe there more flexible and lighter and get rid of that reg and filter of the inlet to your gun it restricts movement and is combersome

I have got rid of the regulator from my gun - just using a cheater valve/gauge, with it wide open so it's just a gauge. I didn't have the filter on either but that wasn't on purpose.

I ordered a better 1/2" regulator for the wall. I currently have a super-**** filter/regulator/lubricator (no oil in lubricator of course), and I don't think this is any good. So I ordered a good filter/regulator that has a 10 micron filter in it.

Just been to inspect my handywork from earlier, and it's beautiful!

I was beginning to think the 2K primer-filler was supposed to go on looking like the moon (bumpy!), but this is perfectly flat. Well it's got a very fine grain appearance to it, so still needs flatting/blocking, but it's really even and flat.
