Concrete Dust

Hi Guys,

My garage floor's topping seems to be slowly crumbling and is shedding dust regularly.

Any advice on how to remedy this.

You can get concrete hardeners that are supposed to reduce the dust made. The one I tried was a thin clear liquid, a bit like brick waterproofer. It wasn't very good so I used garage floor paint. If you go that route, I'd recommend the stuff with agregate in it, for a bit of grip, cos the normal stuff is lethal when it gets wet. This will stop dust, and should help stick the floor together a bit.

I've been looking at the local hardware's for concrete hardners - guess what, no ones got a clue to what I'm talking about.

Sika - I know makes a product like that but I'll keep Phil's comment in mind.

Snowcat, I did'nt know that you can use PVA glue that way - sounds interesting, I'll look into it.

What do you guys think about laying a new cement topping or using epoxy?

Looks to me should do the trick. Then self levelling concrete mix or epoxy on top.

Ive used the floor sealant from Whicks and it seamed to work well enough.

Saw that thread - did'nt really pickup any hints on repairs though. This is much more than what a paint job can fix.

Or if there is enough depth, just put a scread down 50mm is all you nead, prime with a cement slurry, (straight cement water mix)

as previously mentioned, try the wickes concrete dustprofer works a treat, but if your after a painted finish dont use it, in my shed extention i use self leveling compound and then painted over it its lasted quite well

dry yes, Its only a stop gap option but it will stop dust from through, when I did the building work on my house I used it to seal everything from, the kitchen floor prior to tiling to, bonding up before plastering and even mixing a bit with the wash coat before painting, universal stuff, non toxic, and doesn't react with anything you may do in the future, ie rescread the floor.....

Yep, whatever DIY you're doing, if in doudt, give it a coat of PVA. Its really good watered down on fresh dry plasterwork. Makes the first coats of paint so much easier to apply.

As for self levelling compound, I noticed on the last pack I had that it recommended you cover it with something, carpet, tiles, lino etc, as soon as it was dry, as it does not make a good hard wearing surface. I'm not sure that just paint will give the sort of life you're after.

If you do put a new screed down (which I'm having to do in my barns) then stick a thin plastic membrane underneath, and thet'll make it waterproof.
