Concrete driveway repair.

I need to do a temporary repair on this mess.



I'll dig out the broken stuff and wack down some hardcore but what kind of concrete? I would like rapid set as we need to get in and out asap but is it worth it?
I can lob a couple of scaff boards down but how much weight will normal concrete take after 12 hours?

Usually non quick set is foot traffic on the end of day three , light motors day seven and heavy stuff 28 days to 88 years in curing. Could you do it split top to bottom in two sections with an expansion joint by the wall , int emiddle and if ned another opposite the wall having one right across in two pieces up by the car might also help you.

Temporary will take about 3/4 of the money and time todo it right…..do it right, do it once!

There are more expensive options but the cost increase Vs performance increase doesn't tally.

There are a few others we use but would be cost prohibitive on a driveway as Obviously rapid setting products are expensive.
It is usually more cost and time effective to break out cut square and tarmac and area.
Tarmac can be trafficked in small areas relatively quickly and is around £140 a tonne for small collections at the moment.

I can only comment on how I would approach such a scenario.

As usual with <broken stuff> my first reaction is "why"? Why has that thing failed and in this case I'm going to hazard a guess that 1. it is a high traffic, high stress area just because of where it is (people always cut corners!) 2. it's right on an edge and 3. effectively a corner join between two "straights"

So I assume it doesn't have anything like as strong a foundation as the centre of each straight which I further assume tails off in strength as it gets towards either edge. Therefore maximum weakness literally meets in that corner.

As has been observed, it can take just as long to do <anything> as it does to do <the right thing> and in this case, I suggest the primary cause of failure is not in the surface finish but the foundation.

Finally, if the feds get involved after the fact, they'd have to dig it up to discover what, if anything, had been done underneath. Frankly if they went to that extent I'd be all DEADPOOL and simply suggest "it was like that when I got here..."

We're on clay here and in a conservation area so aren't allowed block paving.

It's a temp lash up to prevent the boys cars grounding out on the ****y drive, the council have ignored my pleas to fix the tarmac so I'll just cut it out myself one day and get some Mac off my neighbour to fill the hole.
All this was caused by delivery vans and lorries breaking up the tarmac which lead to water pooling then the frost buggering the concrete.
It'll be redone at some point but I need a quick fix now.

Quick fix is just whack in a bag of hardcore, and just keep compacting it. Or dig a bit out and fill, then compact, when it settles add a bit more. Eventually itll be solid.

If its a temporary fix dig out the slush, tidy up the edges, fill with type one and top up with 50mm of cold app tarmac.

your patching not worth the cost or time

do a metre or car size sort that out and cement it what you have taken up refill the water holes

if the council want to complain about it then use they failed to maintain so have to do something as the council tax you pay for isnt worth its payment as they are not providing a service to its residents even in a conservation area

Temporary will take about 3/4 of the money and time todo it right…..do it right, do it once!

dosnt apply as your replacing like for like concrete is already down your removing old concrete to replace with new

I'm looking at cutting out a 2x3 meter lump and concreting that amount. I could just keep going to the full length as it's all crxp but I don't have the time or want to ***** a load of money on a drive that's getting replaced at some point in the next years.
As for the council, they are predictable useless and haven't fixed the knackered tarmac, I'll escalate things probably and see what they do...

from your first post it reads you want to patch but in the long run its not worth it

a delivery of concrete is quicker for setting than a self mixed concrete base

the council reference is if there isnt something already there your replacing concrete pathway to concrete pathway

ex council 2x2 slabs are usefull for temp, rip out hard core tamped then slabs , two rows . sorted.
