Concrete advice please.

Hi All,

I have finally got the chance to move to a lovely rural property with sufficient outbuildings for my projects and cars.

However, The only outbuilding that is able to be used for the cars is basically a hay barn (small one about 10 meters by 5.5) and has no floor, just earth. I am looking at being there a few years, but it is rented. (they are happy to let me work on/improve it).

To that end, i want to concrete the floor and put a two poster in. Would i be right in saying i would need 4" of 3500psi concrete over an inch of hard core for the ramp? Also to minimise the cost of concrete would 4" of concrete for the ramp and 2" over the rest be sufficient (it will at the most have light vehicles parked on it). I want to find a comprimise between the doing a proper job and doing it for as little cost as poss as its only a rental .

Also should i use rebar?

And Finaly does anyone know a rough estimate of ready mix 3500psi per M3?

Forget the hardcore, you need to scrape back to undisturbed sub soil.
4" of C35 overall with 6" under ramp, if you get reinforcing fibres added to the mix it will only increase the cost marginally.
I would still put in a sheet of mesh around the ramp.
Your looking at £90 to £120 per m3 plus Vat depending on your distance from the supplier, how much competition they have and if it's a full load or not.
Loads sizes tend to be 6 m3 or 8 m3.

The quotes we have been getting are aprox £80 per cube, plus £80 for delivery (ex vat) (which is probably the same as above, but its nice to see how the price brakes down)

Also -

Questions as to depth etc are always going to be a little hazy as a lot of it depends on the soil conditions. Ive asked the same sort of questions before, but you also need to look arround your own area to see how things have been done by others, and how they have (or have not) lasted.

the instructions with my 3.5T two post list specifies a minimum of 150 mm thick concrete.

you could just do 150mm in the ramp area and 4 inch in other areas if you do this can you get a reduction in rent for improving the barn

Thanks Guys , Unfortunately no reduction in rent , but its a good price anyway.

I am going to get a proper quote when i have properly measured up. So im looking at 150mm under the ramp (just the pillars or a car size square?) and 96mm over the rest. Im guessing c35 is 3500psi, in which case i wouldn't need the mesh?

The small amount of research i have done so far was on US sites.
