I run Mint on an old laptop but if you want to run something like an industry standard cad program you have to have Windows I'm afraid.

For a starter you could type 'msconfig' into the run bar (windows key + r to open it), click the 'start up' tab at the top and review all of the applications which start up with your OS. There tends to be a lot of rubbish in there like adobe or itunes related stuff. Avoid un-ticking anything related to your hardware like soundcard app or graphics card etc but definitely worth un-ticking a lot of the stuff you don't need running in the background, if anything breaks just reverse what you did and re-tick it.

I would avoid using Linux as your desktop if your not particularly tech savvy it can be just as problematic as Windows but the problems can be even more difficult to fix unless you good with command line etc.

If you want hardware advice get an SSD, probably the single biggest improvement to computer speed you will make these days with an upgrade.

It's a friend I rebuilt a computer for, he runs Autocad and is not computer savvy at all. He switches it on and opens the program. I use Windows 10 on my desktop but Mint on an Advent laptop I found a couple of years ago and am too tight to buy the proper discs for it.

ive built computers for years i still do for some people not many nowadays but even im reducing on the computers that i have now so after 4 more have been used up its time to renew them, its same with the laptop ive used it for so long and then put it away even battery is still good in the machine
