you can get viruses from downloading software from other sites but not always
viruses are mainly got from visiting a website
downloading freeware
downloading pirate software depends on the site you use or depends on which person is uploading it
downloading software with extra software that gets installed as well

To be honest, talk of "viruses" is probably slightly misleading. A virus is a piece of software that, once its infected a computer, is then able to spread itself to other computers (typically in the same home or office network).
The incidence of true "viruses" nowadays are very, very low.

What we're primarily talking about here (and alluded to by Gaz) is "malware", or malicious software. This is software that doesn't spread by itself (like a virus), but is inadvertently installed by the poor user (aka us!) and then does bad things. It may not do these bad things immediately - lots of malware will lie dormant, checking home with its controller, and then spring into life when commanded.

So, technically, you're looking for "anti-malware software" rather than "anti-virus software". That said, most people do conflate the two terms and most "anti-virus software" spend most of their life looking for malware - all of the free apps that I linked to earlier check for malware.

As above. I have friends who work in IT, and they can't believe I'm crazy enough not to run all sorts of protective software.

I keep my machines clean by not using the left mouse button when the pointer is over something suspect.

Very occasionally I run an online scan or two, but they come up clean.

I even saw a computer once, not connected to the inernet, and not used with external data. The user still had about 3 av programs running on top of each other!

I don't know where they thought the bad stuff was going to come from!

just google internet security offers , I do it every year , Norton sends me a renual and its always expensive so I just search for best offer and put new code in , got Norton full security for £30 which covers up to 10 devices

My view of Mcafee is it is more like a virus than the viruses it is supposed to protect you from, sneakily finding its way in on any program it can, doing its own thing not protecting properly but worse killing off other AV programs its a pain in the backside, even if you use tools to rid it when you go in the registry mths after---- OH LOOK Mcafee Mcafee Mcafee.
when using win10 if you run any other virus program windows defender shuts down and wont run .
I wont have it and try my best to avoid it but I can guarantee there will be traces of it in most computers.
As said I try to steer WELL away, but funny enough I had malware on one mine, in the last few days, ran allsorts to rid it, in safe mode, boot disc out of windows etc etc cmd prompt etc etc. the only way was to delve deep into the registry and found it in many files, and hads a devil job to rid it, BUT whilst in there found several mc,arsy files !!! The bloke that invented Mcaffe is called Mal Ware I'm sure !!!.
