All I needed!

I can see the C drive with Windows on it using Linux. I can't see it using anything else including the command prompt on the repair utility.

C drive should be an M2 512Gb and D the 1Tb SSD. It now seems that the computer belives that the SSD is now the primary drive and the M2 is not present.

Acronis finds backups on the SSD but can't then find the M2 to restore to. I have ordered a Samsung 980 drive in case it is a stuffed M2 but I wonder if anyone could help further please? I am a bit stuck as I need to transfer some config files to a customer.

Boot order is OK, running from repair USB key here. BIOS can see the M2 drive OK.

Does your BIOS give you the option to run a SMART check on the M2?
If it's on the way out and you have space on the SSD you could do a 'cat /dev/sd0 > backup' from Linux to try and back it up before it fails completely (replace sd0 with correct drive)

I have found the M2 which thinks it is drive G for some reason. Rebuild bcd hasn't achieved anything as you can see.

try removing old BCD first ?

ren g:\boot\bcd bcd.old
then
Bootrec /FixMbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

or a chkdsk /r

or diskpart and change drive letter ?
