I have a Benq 24" 1920x1080 monitor currently and fancy something a bit bigger to use as a primary monitor with the Benq as secondary.

There are lots out there and perhaps 27" might suit me. Then I have to decide on whether or not the curved screens are a gimmick or if they are brilliant for my CAD work which is the priority. What is a "gaming" monitor and is that good or bad for my purposes? Plenty of unknown brands on the market which I am not enamoured of, but could do with value for money regardless. I have a £150 Amazon voucher to put towards it, so it needs to be something available there. I see various LG, AOC, Acer etc.

Gaming monitors I understand have higher refresh rates so moot for general usage.

Samsung and ASUS have always been my gotos. Samsung always used to have very dark blacks and good contrast ratios.

Never really tried a curved screen, I tend to prefer having dual screens over a bigger one. Typically have four things open when designing electronics, one will be the code editor (for pin mappings etc), another will be schematics, then PCB layout and often a browser for datasheets. Having those four views split across two screens works well due to the way that Windows / Linux can dock things.

I'm thinking a QHD monitor with minimum 100Hz refresh. There are 165Hz offers but unknown Chinese brands. I will go and look at the listings again with those parameters.
Many reviews complain about inbuilt speakers, but that is something common to all flat screens as there just isn't any room for decent drivers.

I have 2 x 27" curved Samsung Monitors mounted on wall brackets, one above the other.
Don't waste desk realestate with monitor stands.

I was a bit sceptical of curved monitors at first but now I'm used to them, I won't go back.

I find flat screens really odd now, being as you sit so close to them, I do notice the difference in distance between the centre and the edges of the screen...now..

I spend a lot of time editing video .
I use a curved screen and would never go back to flat .

I’d also never go back from a curved screen. Mine is 37” wide and, it may sound odd, but being able to just swivel your head a millimetre or two to either side, and immediately being able to take in what’s on the far left or far right of the screen has a huge impact on lowering fatigue (mental and neck pain wise).

i dont see the point in a curved screen either

i also detest widescreen with a vengence so i always switch it and get rid of the black bars

Love my ultra wide curved.

Couldn't go back now.

But I wouldn't be watching films on it.

I use Dell curved uhd monitors...think mine are 34 or 36....had them a very very long time!

As above...curved is the way to go. I found the high definition really helps make text a lot clearer for me. I don't use motion so my requirement was to have super clear text to prevent eye strain.

Also I bought a proper arm so the screen stand is gone!

I have had many over the years and some are better at certain things than others.
Graphic design where colour accuracy is paramount I would look at LaCie
CAD work where resolution consistency and stability matters, Dell Ultrasharp.
Good all round office monitors, Lenovo or Samsung.
Gaming? Ask my son LOL.
Curved monitors I found to be rather irksome. Good at nothing except distorting the image. Even curved TVs are irritating for this. Also, it can be hard to get rid of the reflections cos some part of it always seems to pick up something to reflect unless it’s in a dark room.

I'm reading this on one of the two iiyama screens on my desk at work - seem reliable enough, having used them since before Covid started, dragged them home, then back again. I don't like the desk mount we have, so mine are on their own stands - bolted to the desk mount, I can't get them close enough to me. Used mostly for CAD work.

Think I now have a Philips 27" at home - an Amazon cheapie.

That reminds me, the ones I used to have at my old job had a USB hub built in and also the ability to easily rotate through 90°. Useful when I was having to trawl through 20,000 page datasheets.

Just checked....I have the Dell 34" ultra sharp curved.

I run it on 3440x1440...made a huge difference with text clarity.

Iiyama used to be the go to for gaming screens back in the day as I recall!

I use a 1080p 32'' TV as a monitor, I think it's 60Hz refresh, while not as good as a dedicated monitor, for general office use it does me just fine and I enjoy the larger screen I can clutter.

I have had AOC, ASUS in the past without issue.

Ive often wondered about using a TV like this. What are the disadvantages vs a dedicated monitor? I don't game so the answer may be different for office work vs gaming?

i use 2 19" lg tvs for my monitors. there are no disadvantages against a similar specced dedicated monitor. it wouldn't be fair to compare them to gaming monitors with 100+hz refresh though.

It suits me, for intense graphics and playing games a dedicated monitor is best but so long as your TV has a minimum refresh rate of 60Hz and 1080p, ( or slightly less and a smaller screen, 1080i ) , for office use, photoshop/paint, viewing photos and the like, no problem and I like the larger screen.

If your PC is capable you can run two TVs for monitors in this fashion, with the added benefit should you so wish, you can plug in a Fire Stick.

I have found HDMI makes better viewing when using a TV as a monitor.

Depends on the use case...for general use it probably doesn't matter a whole lot.

For detailed work I find that the higher definition makes it a lot easier as the characters are clearer on the screen. Being able to distinguish a "." from a "," for example.
