My PC has a drive caddy so I run two identical 320Gb HDDs, one at a time. As soon as one falls over I switch to the other, run the second drive as a slave and fettle it that way.
Extended periods of Emule-ing invariably allow some scumbag in the back door so it's a price I have to pay, I guess.
One of the most useful bits of PC kit I ever bought is an IDE to USB adapter so you can plug spare HDDs into a USB slot; Windows sees it as an external storage drive. It even works with CD/DVD writers.
If I'm away from home I unplug the writer and HDDs and lob them in the safe just in case there's a thief about...
