Computer charger

Anyone with a Dell charger & this connector 3pin looking to see if there is any voltage other than 20v DC out.
It is an old machine latitudeCPi

do you mean the 3 pin 240v power adapter to the box before its regulated down to the required laptop voltage ?

That the one @Luke have 20 VDc between the 2 lower pins was wondering if top pin was just a spare connector or has a control voltage on it

Dell have a habit of having some identifying signal on third pins with out which they will power the laptop but not charge the battery

That's interesting do you know what sort of signal, voltage or some waveform from the switch mode PSU ?
That is the problem I have

I did some googling too, apparently one-wire is pretty common.

I don't have a scope at home to check.

@Luke thanks it is an old machine with software that hates to run on anything other than Win 98 a Dell latitude CPi even the 3 pin plug is a rareish beast I hate lap tops but
Don't know if a machine that old had the 3 wire connection

The laptop I had, which is why I recognised the charger (and still have a few), is 14 years old, if that helps.

What are you trying to achieve?

I have an iGo juice charger from a good 10 years ago which has one of those plugs in the connectors kit. What do you need to know/want it for? Do you have a dead PSU dead laptop or retrofitting something??

It runs on charger but batteries don't charge correctly could be charger or main board fault + I had a faulty new battery

Check in the bios... Dell often have a battery tester and health monitor thingy

If the charger powers the laptop then the charger is fine

Was it OEM or made in the Land far away? [yes, they probably all are, but 'compatibles' aren't always what they claim to be. ]

This is not true of Dell chargers that identify themselves to the laptop
It is well known they fail to identify properly and will run but not charge as said earlier

I can lend you a genuine charger if you'd like. I'd check it with my laptop first before sending it.

I can dig around, I might also have a spare.

It runs with charger connected but not on batteries only not even for a couple of minutes.
Yes, says it is Dell battery (new) looks good quality , It is the original Dell charger, AA20031.
F2 Alt P Alt P Alt P says battery is charging it is telling porkies its not, & not running on battery only
That's why I inquired as to signal out of 3rd pin on charger it would appear not to be a common type as most Dell units have coaxial connectors. After reading @130 link all were coaxial connectors
Running Win 98
Will have to wait til lI run across a charger

Reading other sites regarding Dell they appear to be the only co to try & mess up a simple product & it can causes a No of strange faults
