Computer build advice wanted.

The last computer I built was back in 2003/4, an AMD 2500 overclocked to 3200, so I'm a bit out of touch...

I done something silly (probably), today I've been look at various websites trying to decide which cpu and motherboard to order.
As the day progressed the supply of processors have slowly sold out...

So I've ordered a Ryzen 9 5900x cpu
which should arrive on Sunday.

My question is which X570 motherboard should I consider/order any recommendations or any boards to stay clear of?

Also there's now water cooling units for the cpu,
any pointers as to a decent unit would be helpful?

Id like onboard and wifi if possible, I intend run either 16gb or 32gb of 3200 ram.

Its main use hopefully will be video editing, office type bits, defo not gaming.

I'm sure there are members who are into computers and IT types,
who might advise me, please..

Re water cooling.

Unless your planing to push your components beyond there design by overclocking I wouldn't worry. A decent aftermarket air cooled will be fine.

Can't really advise on mobo. Out of touch myself. Threw my spec together via pcpartspicker and researched the important bits

Your rams at the sweet spot. If you've got the funds may as well Chuck the 32 in now. Running 32 in mine as I deal with large audio sample library's

What have you decided re Gpu.


Also dont forget a nvme drive.

My board. Though I didn't bother with WiFi. Mine lives by the router.

Hasnt given any issues. Even easy to flash the uefi)bios

Funny enough I bought the 5900x a few months back when it was on sale, I went with a water cooler at the same time as it was on sale too but I'm struggling to find a case to fit it!.....from what I've read a decent air cooler can be just as good ( some people say better)

Ive been looking all day for a motherboard, GPu (I'm dreaming) and case

I know there's a tomahawk motherboard for 150 on ebay (new)

Nvme. SSD small form factor and connects directly to the mobo and uses pcie4 lanes for data transfer instead of storage controllers

I use a 1tb nvme for os and core programs. A couple of SSD and a couple of HDD for bulk storage of films/media

Do you need an X570?

You could also use a B550.

Depends a lot on what features you want, rear connectivity, and if you really need that x570 chipset and how you want those PCIe lanes. Motherboard manufacturers love to tier their product stack so you always have to compromise on something.

I've had good luck with MSI boards, both the B450 and B550. Asus tend to be overpriced, Gigabyte tend to be buggy - but it is all model dependant. The Tomahawk and Asus Tuf Gaming seemed to hit a good bang for buck point.
All of them make some really rubbish boards as well.

You will find some very detailed breakdown of board recommendations on youtube - Hardware Unboxed and Gamers Nexus usually do good roundups.
If you can tolerate a Buildzoid 4 hour ramble on 1.75 playback speed you can usually dig out some useful information

Don't get too sucked in to finding the most perfect VRM, a lot of these overclockers get obsessive about them, and you are probably never going to push it - look at the full feature set of the board and what is useful to you.

You will want to go for NVME for video editing and your main OS drive. You can bung in some SSDs for archive storage, or spinning rust if you're are feeling nostalgic.

Edited just to say, as suggested above - forget a custom loop water cooling setup, either get a decent air setup or go for an all-in-one. Less hassle, and it will be fine.
Don't skimp on the PSU either - get something decent quality, ideally with multirail, More watts isn't necessarily better and often not required, go for quality. I'm fond of the bequiet units.

Being as I'm 66 now this will probably be my last computer build for me, so it makes sense to by a good board.

I used a Gigabyte motherboard last time, but I'm open any manufacturer really.

I recon up to £230.00 max for a MB.

Being as I'm 66 now this will probably be my last computer build for me, so it makes sense to by a good board.

I used a Gigabyte motherboard last time, but I'm open any manufacturer really.

I recon up to £230.00 max for a MB.

I always used to over spec motherboards for the same reason, bios update and they will often support the next gen cpu

The machines I have now will last a long time, I can't see there being a need for me to have a massive spec any time soon

That was my logic with the x570 board too. Currently have a r7 3700x in it but in the future I can max out the socket for a cheap upgrade.

wifi is not really needed then again id rather buy an extra card or 7.00 usb stick is ample enough for wifi
