compression tester

I purchased a tester off of ebay for my mitsi derv

anyway went to use it and the needle didnt stay put after the the test.
so I complained and they sent me a new one same thing is happening.

so cheap toot or am I missing something?

no i didnt becasue they have used loads of some sealer that sets hard, i took the other one apart to check it had a nrv which it did

slightly different but a oneway valve messed up the oil press gauge I bought...
always stayed at the highest pressure reading....
bined the valve and now reads whats actually happening at all temps....
higher when cold and visa versa........

I have something similar and only petrol compression.

Mine is a Sealey. Utter rubbish. I sent the first one back because the flexi coupled readings were 30psi below the rigid line reading. Second one was exactly the same. Reviews on Amazon suggest that it was not unusual.

Have you considered the possibility the engine has no compression? Why else would you be testing it?

hum not really its my daily driver, but it is old and lacking in power or maybe that is just because of the gearing with bigger tyres

@123hotchef I know an "expert" who could rebuild that engine for you. It would be pretty much guaranteed as far as the first gate. Beyond that you could take your pick between it, blowing the turbo up because running in oil isn't good for turbos, burning excess oil because the piston rings have coked up due to being installed upside down, still using coolant because they thought not getting the pitted block skimmed would be ok, or seizing because the main bearings are the wrong ones for the engine block...
And they'll also advise you that blanking the EGR valve will help avoid head gasket failures by lowering the combustion temperature (for those who don't know, the entire point of EGR is it contaminates the burn to lower the combustion temperature below 600degC to prevent the production of NOx)

Longer hose = more volume = lower compression.
With a compression test, the actual pressure isn't normally that much use anyway, as various things (cranking speed, temperature, the test gauge itself) will effect the pressure achieved. What is normally far more important, is the comparison between cylinders.
If all cylinders are low on compression, then you've probably got far more obvious signs that all cylinders are worn, like burning lots of oil, heavy breathing, and/or excess crankcase pressure because the breather can't cope.​

Agreed, but you are also looking for the peak pressure which the rigid line provides. The flexible is the same length and bore, but I suspect that the flexible is ballooning.

I bought one same problem, the reply I got was its hard running a small business would you accept £3 (yes three) as compensation, I said no , full refund and pay for return postage, they gave me full refund and said keep it.

well this is the 2nd one the replacment! I either send it back for a full refund or fit a NRV and see if that fixes it
