Hello all. My son (and I, sort of) is restoring an old, rusty MG Midget. He's doing it to learn the steps of restoring a classic car, and he's doing a welding and fabrication course. He's making all the decisions and doing anything technical, I'm cleaning and fetching things. All good.
When I was younger, we used to use cellulose paint on patch ups, and I'm now looking ahead (probably to next spring) to painting the car (apparently that'll be my job) a panel at a time. We have a compressor and will be getting a LVLP gun, and we'll be having to do the work in our single garage. But the plan is to prime as we go using an aerosol.
I understand epoxy primer seals watertight compared to some other primers, but I'm wondering if epoxy is best for cellulose colour coat. I've been reading around the forum and elsewhere and understand there are now better alternatives to cellulose but still feel it'll be more forgiving in our environment and with lack of 2K-suitable PPE and a less than perfectly clean garage.
Also, if epoxy primer is the way to go, will it be ok on top of other, mostly unknown body paints? The chassis members up front and internals to the car appear to be the original cellulose from factory, but most of the outside panels have been treated to a nasty, roll-on finish paint that's clearly not the same. That'll need abrading back, but I'm hoping we don't have to remove it all back to bare metal. Is epoxy very tolerant of being applied onto unknown paints? I'm thinking to use 1K, but see there's an Iso-free 2K.
Thanks for any advice, Chris
