I'd say for the domestic stuff you want a hice "hearty" sounding name that makes you sound local and trustworthy.
I've no idea what part of leeds you're from but (*looks at map*) something like "Headingley Railings" or "Armley Ironwork" would be nice
But as marknotgeorge says you have to have full name t/a & address on proper receipts etc

It may be difficult to switch to an LTD or something like that when you get bigger. I know someone who has a big company (300+ employees) and still has sole trader status. He wants to change it to GMBH (German version of ltd), but turned out to be extremely difficult because the banks demand expensive refinancing.

While 2 businesses running side by side can work very well with the unincorporated one selling to domestic, non VAT registered customers, and the company selling to trade, VAT registered customers there are a number of practical issues you will have to deal with well. HMRC are not very keen on these structures so if you don't get the detail correct they will give you problems.
You should go and see the accountant you intend using and discuss it.

Hi,
just one other point on Yellow Pages, etc...
I'm sure you'll have seen AA Taxis, AAA Taxis, etc, then someone opts for 1AA Taxis as numbers come before letters...
starting the name with a full stop takes precedence over letters /and/ numbers...
.paulco would go before 1aaapaulco.

I agree with MG David. Be wary of what banks say and it is important to have a good accountant. One who can give good advice and preferably knows your line of business. A good accountant can save you quite some money and be a good guide in the labyrinth of rules and regulations. A bad one can tear down your business….

Agree with that one, I looked into spliting some of the work away and basicaly being involved In 2 business, Because VAT was one of the issues it became practicaly imposible to do, It would have ment much complex cross invoiceing, and then proveing that a machine I was claiming VAT back on one side, was not being used to profit on the non Reg side, Very complex I decided to stick with just the one, As things turned out most of the work I now do 95% is for VAT reg companys. In my experance the "cleaver people" who tell you the inland revenue dodges are ether not in business, or gone within a couple of years, normaly with the revenue on there ****.

Why should VAT be an issue to punters? They all pay VAT when they get their car fixed, go to the builders merchant, get building work done etc.

You could always not give an obvious sub-total, just give the full price and a "all prices include vat" note, or summat. But I wouldn't bother meself.

Vat is normally and issue when selling to joe public, because any non VAT registered buissiness will be cheaper than a VAT reg one. and as JP tends to be tight fisted and say but i can buy similar in B&Q for £80, it does help a little

Company names are tricky things. The piece of paper with my limited company says I will do a couple of very specific things and then possibly anything else. Would have been helpful to me to keep the company name broad, but I got it a bit narrow (on the advice of my accountant).
Same with this website domain name. mig-welding... what about when we talk about TIG and arc?
Current trend in name branding is to have a generic name and "brand it". Google is a good one. Best not to be too restrictive. If you choose gates in the name it might put off potential customers looking for general fab work.
Something random and fabricators might be good for one of the names. A generic something random for the other maybe.
Of course you can have trading names too - my trading names are rarely the same as my limited company name.
