That’s what I have. They do a shorter version. 170mm I think. It’s slightly less torque. Big batteries Is helpful.

What sort of space do you have? Might help with options / recommendations

Quit important. The tool will be carted up and down ladders and in amongst scaffold and steelwork

Just get the bigger Makita if you only have the subcompact one, the 700nm model is still pretty compact, the 1000 is a little bulky but I've snapped M16 bolts clean off with that one.

We can't get the bigger ones into the spaces we need to. For example a 4-bolt plate on a 150x150x30 UC. The body is too fat to line the socket up on the nut or bolt.

The 700 is not much bigger than the 300/290 so you're probably okay with that, the 1001s are still pretty short but the bodies are definately wider than even a gloved/armoured fist on the handle.

@8ob may know but I think there are sockets with integrated joints in them. He mentioned them when we were talking about removing my JCBs starter motor.

If you are clambering around on scaffold it might be worth looking at the pin and rubber oring type socket retention system, last thing you need is a socket dropping from height and hitting someone on the swede.

so ive been told by a long term garage user those cv joints loose the impact fro0m the gun when in use as it dosnt transfer down them that well

ive also used them and to be honest it didnt impact that well compared to using a longer bar infact the longer bar was better to use than the cv joint if you cant get in with the gun because of access issues

impact gun reference snapon and i bought the full set myself as it was easier to fasten wood to steel girders with the gun

Compact and grunty tend to be mutually exclusive. For flange bolts on pipework, mostly galv, some BZP, m20 and m24 with the occasional m27, that have had up to 35 years out in all weathers, the 3/4" Makita dtw1002 hasn't failed me yet (though sometimes it can take 20 or 30 seconds and the nuts come off too hot to handle). It's neither compact nor light though. If buying it, I'd heartily recommend getting an impact-rated universal joint: it won't get straight on fasteners close to pipe or walls, etc, due to its bulk. Whatever you are thinking of getting, make sure it is compact enough to get on straight. Using a Universal joint is a bit of a pain. I have the version with the springy ring retainer, rather than the pin. A lot of the time, I find that particularly recalcitrant nuts need the socket pulling off to knock the nut out. This would be much more of a faff with the more positive pin-retention.

There is an all-but-identical 1/2" one, the dtw1001, which only seems to differ by the drive size.

I also have the 1/2" dtw285, which is much lighter and much more compact. The 1002 only comes out when it is really needed. I've not tried anything in between.

I'll try and remember to measure up the distance from centre of socket to outside body on my M18 Hi torque tomorrow for you. I'd say from memory it's about 4" across the body.

what kind of batteries do you have already?

and how much £££ do you want to spend? is there enough in the job for a new gun + a bunch of batteries?

is there somewhere handy you can charge them while you work?

I'm all for the milwaukee gun and I love mine... better than all the others I've tried..... but it seams like every manufacturer has 50 different power options for the same size/look of gun so it's hard to compare like for like


If you've already got a bunch of batteries for one make stick with that and just get the most powerful gun they do?


also.... im my experience bigger batteries give noticeable extra power to undo tight bolts than smaller batteries (same goes for flat vs charged)

8ob has mentioned the risk of the socket falling, but also consider what facilities the tool has for teathering. It will make a considerably bigger dent in someone's bonce if it drops than a 30mm socket and might not work too well afterwards either. The red colour might save a little cleaning.

For the second problem, employ a less porky worker.

The first question after the OP should probably have been "Which "18V Makita manages probably one in four"?"

Knowing the ("nut busting") specs of that should at least give an indication of what is inadequate.

Undoing five thousand very tight 20mm nuts/bolts is going to be a tall order for any battery nut gun, may pay to send a chimp up there with a couple of gurt breaker bars, run through the whole lot cracking them off and just gently nipping them up ready for the guys with nut guns. Just thoughts

That's a good suggestion from @8ob. I wouldn't want to be lugging my M18 up and down ladders all day. I think it's even more of a lump than my framing nailer and that's heavy enough.

The M12 stubby is a wonderful little impact that'll get into lots and lots of tight spaces but only I think 250ftlbs. Used that all day putting up and taking down scaffolding, nice light and compact.

With a 5Ah battery on it comes in at a hefty 3.6kg compared to the M12 Stubby at 1.1kg with a 2Ah battery
