Common Carp

I just had somebody wanting a sculpture for her daughter as a wedding present, her hubby is a carp fisherman.
So hopefully two happy chappies.

measures 1.2m long.
I finished it today and have put the ammonium chloride on it just before leaving work. She wants it rusted and lacquered.

Are you sure you mean a common carp Chunko? Its much more the shape of a mirror, Short and deep. I'm not putting dampeners on it as it look very nice indeed.

chunko you are at odds with just about everyone on the forum, you are causing rust on your work while most of us are trying to get rid of it

Nice one chunko, I rather like that, certainly an unusual wedding present, we got kitchen appliances , When repairing car bodywork the most common advice is to remove all traces of rust or it will eventually re -appear through the paint do you find your pieces continue to rust under the lacquer finish?

The wedding present thing is a bit of a role reversal.
In the past I have blokes buy their wives a sculpture for the garden of something they like themselves. It seems here the women are buying something for themselves. Cool.
The fish? Scott00031 I remember common carp being less fat in the belly and more elegantly proportioned like this.

But they seem lately to be getting fatter a bit like the human species. it is based around a photo of the Son In Laws big catch.

The rusty thing does seem slightly ironic.
Ammonium Chloride? NH4Cl, decomposes as it dries to give off Ammonia, NH3, leaving behind HCl weak Hydrochloric acid, an oxidising agent that oxidises the metal. Simple and safe chemistry. Pongs a bit but not too bad.

The metal goes a weird green colour after about half an hour, then rusts quite quickly, photos tomorrow.
Why do this chemically? a sculpture that is properly rusty can look lovely, one that is starting to go rusty can look bloody tragic.

This photo was taken 48 hours after putting the Chloride stuff on him.

The current damp grotty misty weather is perfect for this.
A couple more days and he will be ready for a quick rub down and varnishing.

must admit preferred him when he was shiny, but will be interesting to see the effect the varnish has.

bet that was fun, post some good pictures when it's varnished please very interested to see the finished effect, I know your seahorse is varnished but due to it's size it's hard to see the finish due to the distance the photo was taken from Thanks Norm
