Colour codes for underground conduit

Hi

I'm planning on running some armoured cable from the garage and I was thinking of burying some corrugated conduit and sticking the cable in that so I can easily change it latter if I need to.

Thought I'd do the job properly and use the correct colour, so I looked it up and it should be black but I have already got a field drain pipe buried there and that is also black, what idiot thought using black for electric is a good idea ?

So I'm thinking of using orange or purple so it is easy to tell the difference from the field drain, It's pretty obvious it's not got street lighting or motorway cables in it when it's buried on my property.

What do you all think ?

If your doing it yourself you can use any colour BUT if your DNO is installing the cable into your ducts then it has to be the correct colour as my mate unfortunately found out!

House to shed----Mines in GPO black duct about 2" OD, then the cable is inside a Galvanised conduit its old Copper Pyro, been there since 1967. From the shed to the garage is armoured and it too is in a GPO black approx 2" od pipe. House one is burried under paving flags and about 2 feet wide path of concrete. Shed to garage is under a 3` wide flag. About 9" above the black duct is a warning tape, "Cable" i think it says, all compliments of a turbine manufacturer in Heaton,Newcatle. Well my Neighbour was a Sparky there. !!!!

You could use BS1710?

Water - Green
Steam - Silver-Grey
Oils (mineral, vegetable or animal) - Brown
Gases (in either gas or liquid phase - except air) - Yellow Ochre
Acids/Alkalis - Violet
Air - Light Blue
Other Liquids - Black
Electrical Services & ventilation ducts - Orange

its the same here too.

i seen a few laying electric duct in any colour and turning the ends out of the ground with the right colour so it looked right.
but if im laying electric cable in a duct here id use red.

it may not be the right way of doing it but ive laid a lot of armored cable for folk in a trench on its own, thats why its armored, if you want to pull more wires through it then put it in a duct alright but if not id be inclined to drop it into a trench and after some pea gravel back fill id lay down some tape as brightspark says.

My workshop supply is orange underground
It was put in by the contractor I used who deals in all the colours - so I guess it's correct

I seem to remember the guy might have mentioned he could have used one of two colours for the job
I was more interested in getting the job done at the time

black ducting is used by the board for house or shop supplies here just tape above

I had new supply dug in last year here. No duct at all is required for swa supply but it must be a set min depth and the policy is from the power company to lay it in a sandwich of sand so diggers become aware that something is afoot

Mine went in a duct as the cable to the house was requested as three phase - although I only have single

The duct carries the workshop supply so I could draw three phase in if I wished later

The price to span 150 yards overhead from the transformer though is more than three times the cost of a three phase genny

It's purely for myself, nothing to do with the mains supply to the house or garage.

I know it's naughty but I was going to chuck an ethernet and phone cable in the same ducting, but as I say it's purely for my own use and the power cable is for a genny so that won't have any power in it 99% of the time.

if you chuck as you say a phone cable in with the power cable you will have a buzzing on your phone when there is power running through the cable, id guess its not going to do your ethernet any favors either.
its up to you mind but the last time i laid a power cable and a phone cable in a trench i laid them 1mtr apart in two separate ducts to avoid that problem.

Depends on fibre mode, I use singles for intra building. So 3mm CSA. Armoured is preferential though.
