Collet in tailstock...

I was watching a YT video today [weather's not fit for a dog to be out ] and the guy used a collet chuck in the tailstock to hold a drill bit.

Is this just for added rigidity, grip or accuracy over using a 'normal' chuck there?

doesn't matter what you put a drill bit in it wont be accurate only if you ream it afterwards

but it looked to be about 12mm[ish]

I don't think there's any advantages particularly all things being equal but perhaps someone far smarter than me will come along and let us know.

This one, see from 3:30 > 4:00 [ish] for him at the lathe.

The whole video seems to be waaay overkill of a job for the end result, I could see a few alternative ways....
But he obviously has time and enjoys the processes.

He probably just doesn't have a chuck big enough (Or at all). A collet will have more holding power than a keyed chuck so a bigger drill will be less likely to grab the work and spin perhaps. I'll stick to a chuck personally.

Aye, I'll use the ones I have too, saves taking the R32 out of the mill anyway.

I use a collet attachment in my tailstock.....esp to use MAG drill cutters..........ie big holes just 1 cut......
also quite handy for holding taps, part the larger sort...well when starting the first few threads anyway........

Collet chucks hold drill bits very nicely. I use them in my milling machine spindle sometimes. If the bit is ground evenly both sides they don't wander about like they can in a drill chuck.

I definitely use a collet chuck in the mill to hold drills a lot because of this, sometimes the stack up of bits and bobs simply makes the chuck too long.

A collet runs truer than a chuck and usually grips better too.

I use er 32 in the tail stock fet holding taps
Gets a better hold than a drill chuck

Just an over cautious bodger been reading too many diyers opinions.
Nothing wrong with ER and the like in tail stock, just look at the way and means of the machine protecting it rather than using.
Much better way of doing that job any way, hes just pulling a fastun goes hand in hand with above.
