Collecting gas from BOC depot for first time

Local guy at my BOC place told me I shouldn't be putting it in the back of my car for some such reason, he didn't elaborate or care much when I put It in anyway? Maybe it's to do with the compressed gas stickers you can see on vans sometimes

Could be that if the cylinder leaks into the passenger compartment you will become asphyxiated unless you have adequate ventilation

Thing is with gasses that displace air you don't know until it's too late

I have known bottles slide and hit persons driving - the bottle will always win that fight.

Most places offer delivery - use it if you haven't got suitable transport

The thing to bear in mind is, if a 200 bar cylinder leaks, the gas escaping will fill a space equivalent to 200 cylinders, and as has been said you can't see it, smell it or touch it but it will kill you. So be careful

Well my friend and I went to collect her gas from our local BOC outlet.

She collected me and away we went, she was prepared, all documents, 2 forms of ID and her balloon regulator.

Got there and what a helpful place, young man behind the counter sorted the paper work, it was her first visit.

Oh yes, she had the choice to pay now or place on her account.

Me ambled round the shop, glad I left my wallet behind, so much I didn’t know I wanted until I saw it. Pain meds and nerve supressing meds allow rose tinted glasses.

The young man advised my friend that her regulator was suitable to fit and fill balloons, but was not a BOC item. I now suspect a sales pitch.

No. He did give some good prices on BOC balloon regulators and left it at that. The advice was sound and you could see it was what they are told to do, but tapered with common sense.

Out his work friend comes with a “Y” bottle on a trolley and out to the car and into the open boot. He advised if we didn’t have straps he would have to tell use the dangers. All done with customer’s interest. No hard sale. We strapped it down and away we went.

Good service, but no free coffee.

On the way back we stopped at some other Gas supplies places. Both places were similar to BOC.

One place, even though they are a BOC outlet did not have the gas we want, but could get it in a week. Ok, they are a welding specialist.

The other place, were I tend to get my Argon from had both BOC and Buy your own Albee cylinders. Again prices were comparable and in stock.

I think in future we will be going back to my normal out let, if only for convenience and free coffee.

I, through work, have to use BOC, it is in the contract we have with BOC.

So shop around as a lot of gas suppliers will allow you to open a BOC account, some are better than others.

BOC offered an anti knock cap to their cylinders, free. We took them up on their offer. Something the other 2 places did not.

Yep, very aware of that. Good job it's summer as I had all the windows and sunroof wide open on the way home

What are you going to use the fire extinguisher for?

Just go to the depot, ask for a bottle, they will ask for your account no, scan the neck of the bottle and leave you to load it.
No money changes hand.
You need to buy a bottle key.

that is for some however i pay cash over the counter whenever i have got a new bottle of gaz from the boc gas place

According to the FAQ it's law to carry a fire extinguisher in the car if you're carrying a compressed gas bottle? I always have one in the garage anyway so thought it wouldn't hurt to chuck it in the car this morning.

A bottle of Argon IS a fire extinguisher. If you want to be H&S crazy you'd be better carrying breathing apparatus in case it leaks and you have no oxygen left in your car

I have a fire extinguisher in all our vehicles but that's from having to use one in a rta once
The biggest risk in carrying a bottle is being hit by it on sharp breaking or collusion. Seat belts and bits of rope ain't the best at holding a cylinder in one spot
Next is the leak imo argon sits low so even an open window might allow non breathing air below a level?
The pickup takes a w bottle wedged sideways on the diagonal and strapped with two heli ratchets
Bulkhead protects me as does the strapping and it can't roll once diagonally wedged with tailgate up
Just have to let the gas settle a while after

If I had a vehicle without cab separation like my estate car - I would pay for delivery as I have seen a bottle slide into a guy in an old escort van in the eighties and it's not good

For me unless it's a fuel gas or oxygen I'm much more concerned with strapping down the 50Kg + missile shaped lump of steel pointed at me from behind than the gas leaking
