Strolling through eBay as you do and spotted this

Fairly local to me....
Surely he's being a tad optimistic there even if it was mint. It looks like it has been kept in a puddle! Literally.

Despite this, I'm tempted to ask to look as it is pretty close and if it is just light surface rust but not actually too worn it may be fine and actually be a good haggling point. But with a guide price like that, we'd be unlikely to be able to agree on a price!

Way to expensive in my opinion, I paid £500 for mine and it had only ever turned plastic.

It's not the one to go for

Apart from the obvious rust and lack of care it is the training version without the Norton gearbox. Far better examples are on eBay or with dealer at much lower prices.

Sadly that Student is now only worth scrap value - maybe £150 . I've owned several students over the years and even the basket cases that I've bought were far better than that one !

It looks shot to bits, the accuracy of the lathe is dependent on the condition of the slides and heavy corrosion will have destroyed that. You can buy one in much better condition with tooling etc for less than that.

Agreed scrap only, you should find a good example with a gearbox for less than halve his asking price.

Haha, thanks guys. Scrap value was my initial thought. If it wasn't so close, I wouldn't have given it a second glance! Certainly baffled by his buy it now price...

Oh dear. Mine:

I paid £250. Cost more to transport it tbh and that's the trick with these big old machines. As often as not the "seller" just wants them gone, for free once in a while. But if you're going to buy one, it has to come with a lot of decent tooling and accessories. Like travelling/fixed steady, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, multiple quick change tool holders etc. These items are massively more expensive when separated from a ton of recalcitrant scrap buried deep inside a housing estate and hemmed in by new buildings at the end of muddy paths...

The 'Good condition for its age' part of the listing has some accuracy failings too.

What an absolute waste of what was probably a good machine when he bought it.

offer him 75 quid for it sell the chuck and backplate for 60 quid .there was someone wanting a chuck guard on here an odd call but .scrap the rest and get 100 quid for it and your 85 quid up on the deal .even more if u advertise it for the spare parts before u scrap it
