Thanks Seadog, I will let you all know as/when it cuts its first accurate thread....it may be a while as other things will probably jump in the way..

Depending on the drive/spline mounting for the change gear, you maybe be able to purchase a larger one and get someone to turn the teeth off and recut a 42 tooth gear, just an option.
If it's the same as a Bantam gear with splines then Bede tools are showing one for £17.50. If it's a round bore keyed gear I might be able to make one if you can do the keyway, or if you have a slightly larger one as ZZR said I could turn the teeth off and cut it to 42 teeth, so long as I have the appropriate hob.
Wow...last night I was staring at the lathe scratching my head, one night later problem is identified and you guys are putting forward solutions..ZZR I like your thinking, I am able to turn an oversize gear down to size but would struggle to recut it..I have a friend in the trade but he retires end of March..As an aside I must see if I can beg his gear milling cutters.. same guy recut a gear for my Southbend some years back that had some teeth missing...built up with weld...remachined...still going strong
Pete. Its splined and at the moment I don't know if a Bantam spline is the same as a Mk 1 Student but will try and find out, I appreciate your offer to help....will look at Bede tools website as that is a great option if same spline and profile...
