Colchester oil leak

Morning all. Bought my Colchester master from here about 18months ago and have only just wired it up to my vfd (things don’t happen too quickly round here!)
When It was first delivered I noticed it had no oil in so that was noted that I must fill with oil before I used it….when filling this morning it seems to be coming out as quickly as I put it in!! It’s coming from the chuck area, one where it mates to the casing and one further towards the chuck itself. Will this just be a simple case of replacing gaskets? Any help appreciated.

Needs stripping to investigate, that's not a leak, its a torrent. Was it lifted by its chuck? Maybe ask the vendor - Theblackbox wasn't it? when you bought it was there oil in the gearbox sight glass?
IF the nose bearing has failed, and what you're seeing is some sort of bodge, beware, this bearing will cost more than you paid for the lathe....

@minimutly It is indeed a torrent. Just wasted £20 worth of oil too.
I did message the vendor as soon as I’d received the lathe, to ask about the lack of oil in the sight glass.
I can’t say how the lathe was lifted on collection but it wasn’t lifted by the chuck when it was delivered.
I’m gutted, I havnt got the time or knowledge to start stripping it down to investigate.

Did you get a manual for the lathe? I may have one for a Triumph. Have you tried just nipping up the socket head screws on the bearing retainer, might be all thats needed? Perhaps @Theblackbox might know something?

Definitely didn’t leak like that when I had it it was still in use!

Was lifted correctly on collection from memory as I made sure and the guy knew how to lift it anyway.

I wonder if there’s a gasket that’s shrunk and dried out or something? I’ve never taken one of these apart or seen an exploded diagram of it so can’t really comment.

The bearing etc was replaced prior to me getting the lathe but I was given no proof of this just what the previous owners brother told me.

Might be possible to do it from the front?
Or at lease slacken off the cover and get some sealant in there?

I used iso 32, I posted a thread asking what oil to use just after I got the lathe when I saw it needed oil.

I guess I’ve nothing to lose, as at the moment the lathe is scrap, so I think I need to at least see if I can strip it. Thanks for the parts diagram above, but is there a guide anywhere on how to do such a job? I’m ok with stuff if I have instructions to follow, but probably not a chance without a guide.

No manual unfortunately. Il have a look when I get home at the bearing retainer screws.

I have been using iso32 which is the recommended equivalent but I agree. Iso 48 or 68 would make the gears much quieter.

ISO68 will still leak out of the place that's leaking, just a bit slower.

Hmm, thinking about it, the rate at which it was leaking I don’t hold out much hope of iso68 staying put for much longer unless it really is like treacle?
I think I still need to try and strip it down and see what’s happening so if anyone knows of a good guide to do so I’d appreciate it
