Was having a discussion with Aidan (the OP) about this earlier.
*Somewhere* I read of a solution for a similar requirement which involved pouring some bronze over the steel ACME thread to form a nut. It may have been in the build instructions for a Gingery lathe.
A LH tap for ACME thread is USD40 to USD65 from China, and will take weeks to arrive. Making a single-point cutter setup will take days.
If we were able to form an amorphous blob of bronze with the internal threaded section formed in the casting, I think we could machine it to dimensions on a lathe.
Any gaping holes spotted in that cunning plan?
