Me old dad used to like collecting the "limited edition" £2 and 50p coins, now I know they probably minted 1000s of the things but does anyone know of a good place to check if there are actually any rare ones? Or should I take them at face value and buy sweets?

Google is your friend - I thought I had a valuable Brexit 50p, turns out there are only 2 of them in circulation that escaped the withdrawal (date was wrong apparently)...

I have similar piles of old coins that might be valuable. My local craft emporium has several places asking a fiver for £2 coins. The main things I know of the top of my head are the undated 20p (a quantity pressed with the new-style front, and the old-style rear), and the "Kew Gardens" 50p piece.

There are all sorts of articles out there, for example https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/uks-rarest-50p-coins-could-9953304 which tells me that there's a newer 50p that has usurped the Kew Gardens one as the rarest. But in the top ten on that page, some of them were "only 1.4m made" which isn't all that limited to me.

They're probably worth more as a set, especially in mint condition.
I'm not speaking as a numismatist, by the way, just someone that likes collections of objects.

If in mint condition there probably worth more than there face value, i've a collection, but it goes back to old pennies and and threepenny bits, silver sixpences etc.

Look at Christoper collects on YouTube, we collect coins special edition coins and some are very rare if your dad knew what to look for it could be quite a nice collection

Pretty sure they've all been in circulation so not mint unfortunately, time for a bit of searching!

Wifey has a few 50p coins, some have a value.

She has another display frame about half full.

Condition is the key, if any are 'brilliant uncirculated' they will most likely be worth more than face value - how much more may depend on rarity and ultimately that would come down to mintage figures.

Ones to look out for:
Single Market 50p of 1992
Kew Gardens 50p of 2009
Atlantic Salmon 50p of 2023
A complete collection (all 29 coins) of 2012 olympic games 50p's probably holds some value

I got one of those in my change and gave it to my grand daughter as she was collecting them. She has quite a few now.

I'm fortunate to know a guy who the British Museum consulate when a 'new' or unusual coin turns up, So he is good. I had a biscuit tin full of old coins from a late relative. spent a good hour on the phone telling him dates an other info. The best I got was that most were copper and worth slightly more that their face value in scrap.

I took have a tin of old coins, they were my dad's. One I know is rare, it's an early Victorian penny with Victoria's hair in a different style. Worth quite a bit but not as worn as this one is.

Yes 'bun' penny's but condition is important, difficult due to their age.

Pick one at random. Search ebays completed listings... If it's worth 3x face value, it will motivate you to look up the others!

There are two different ones, my wife has both of them, and a Benjamin bunny and a Jeremy Fisher, among others. She collects them for fun and is always checking her change for interesting ones.

The 1973 EEC 50p coin with the hands on is getting very rare now as they have called them all back to the mint to get the nails trimmed
