I don't weld for a living unfortunately I fix land rovers, but it's a future I would like been a full time welder I can mig to with what I'm happy with its not the best out there but I don't think it's bad as I'm only welding once a week.

In fairness most fabricating is limited in welding time. Far more time spent measuring. Cutting and finishing than actually buttoning things up

Codings are specific but certain codings cover you for a number of positions depending on which one(s) you do.
Problem been they have limited shelf life, are expensive and tbh mean nothing with regard to showing an employer what you can do. The idea behind a coding is it qualifies you to do a job in accordance with a weld procedure. Eg a company that welds structural steel on site sends a sample with welding conditions to a governing bodie to be tested. The sample is tested and the WPS approved and suitable the next step is to get the welder coded to That procedure which is very specific so he'll be coded in mma(111) Vup (3G ) plate thickness scope 10-15mm root and milt pass. Your better off getting a recognised qual in the form of an nvq or similar in fabrication. Mig codings are very easy to pass in comparison to mma and Tig so when the time comes im sure you'll get the ones you require.

Not as unlikely now as it once was. Coded welder in the 80s meant In general ASME 9 or similar. Tests were still taken and passed for specific jobs by all standards of guys with codes but none of them ever bothered much more about it and certainly didn't put in on Cvs or call themselves coded
Back then for example I went to do a training and test for a specific job over at Sheffield if I remember correctly stainless
The guy who was instruction brought down a new girl from their offices who was doing administration for them. He was good because she had never welded before and ended up as capable as many their
Could the lass hold down a job as a welder? Nope so much more to it than passing a test

Here's my first tig and my last. I'm a heavy mig welder but I like trying tig practice and practice as I'm a young welder and I want to get in to aerospace welding

Ps your outside corner in ally looks awful. I could do it better with cable ties round my wrists.

Well it makes for a more interesting challenge I suppose.

I've just looked through Google images at those stainless Tig pics. He's claimed the biggest picture as his own work. Madness. I'm gonna look for some robotic welds to pass on as my freehand work now just to stick with the trend. I'm thinking a bit of orbital Tig to start followed by some cold metal transfer off the Fronius web pages then to cap it off I'll have a few of Paul's stainless pics and Hotrodders Alu tanks. Hope you don't mind fellas.
