coating for oak doors

anyone got any good idea for coating internal light oak doors. something durable but not stain or anything that builds up just something to protect from stains and can be cleaned . thanks in advance

I used clear gloss yacht varnish on my doors - stood up to ten years of cleaning, dog scratches and furniture removals.

Danish oil gives a nice finish and is easy to apply.

I used ronseal worktop oil on mine, mainly because I was doing the kitchen worktop and got a bit carried away and oiled any other bare wood in the house, however it looks good and seems to be wearing very well.

Liberon finishing oil would be my choice, dearer than some, but nice to use.

Steer clear of Colron gear though.

was just looking at that product its the daughters choice so I dunno

Fiddes laquer, you can get it in various grades from gloss to matt. If you have a spray system it is really easy to apply and very fast drying - the pre-catalised version on a summers day is dry in about 2 mins, it also brushes quite well without leaving brush marks. I love the stuff and use it on all of my wooden creations indoors. You can build up several coats and almost get it to french polish standards if you are so inclined (personally I use a satin finish and having sprays 2 or 3 coats there is no finishing work to do)

You tell that to my better half! We bought 4 new oak intwrnal doora unfinished. She oiled them all and her hands were like claws each day when she finished.
Mind you it depends on how much detail there is on them that needs the oil working into.
Give I nice finish in my opinion.

I've tried several finishes, all my internal doors are oak. Water based seals don't bring out the grain as well as oil based but the water based polyurethane that are usually used for floors are great for doors and architrave too, look for Bona Mega, often used in shopping centre flooring as its hard wearing and fast setting. It's easy to apply, you use a primer first, light denib then two coats, fast drying and you can use a roller.

However having done all my internal doors with a water based seal (not Bona Mega, it was before I learned about that) given the option again I would probably go for Osmo Polyx Oil. it brings out the grain really well, being oil/wax it doesn't raise the grain so less sanding between coats, only needs two coats, and if you get a scratch you can make a local repair that blends in easily. It is quite expensive but does go a long way and I have a mate who is a cabinet maker/posh shop fitter, he wouldn't use anything else.

I wouldn't use solvent based varnishes indoors if you paid me after using Bona, I think there are Dulux and other equivalents now but usually cost more and I haven't tried them.

For me Osmo polyx oil first and Bona Mega a close second.

stained by oil to the desired colour one coat at a time then 2 coats of yaught vanish couldnt get hold of johnsons vanish at the time

then had to do both frames the 1st pic was red wood stained the other was painted white

Hello Brightspark,

when I built our extension about five years ago, all oak doors and skirting and I used the Osama Poly ox oil and they are still as good as when I did them, excellent stuff. It's a natural looking finish, not shiny which is what I wanted./

As they are interanl doors,
If you do go for an oiled finish and have kids with lil hands and or pets, from memory of when I did kitchens and stuff, Tung oil is supposed to food safe, and blokes I knew who made wooden kids toys used it, best confirm that though, I might be wrong, not cheap either, I seem to recall.

Internal light oak here I used sanding sealer rubbed it well with wet n dry and waxed it buffing with a sheep wool mop on the sander. Did some stained oak doors and those I just used satin varnish flitting off between coats

Wax all the way. Did our pitch pine doors with it and looks lovely.
