Certainly. Some older cars had an internal circlip at the end of the cylinder bore which stopped the piston popping out. Don't know about the Golf though. You can press pedal with hand if you have the piston clamped back with a G clamp and short rod (bolt) to hold it fully in.
to rule out my current hose ?Can you run a straight bit copper to slave to rule out the assembly?
i dont have the orig bits ..i dont know what it should be ? my pic on page 1 kinda looks like 3/16I wouldn't reduce the clutch pipe to 3/16", the clutch pedal may be slow to return. This happened on my Cobra and I had to increase to 1/4"

I tried a dash3 line on my car, to rationalise the spare hoses I had to carry, but it seems car makers were right to put a larger line on clutches,I wouldn't reduce the clutch pipe to 3/16", the clutch pedal may be slow to return. This happened on my Cobra and I had to increase to 1/4"

the pedal felt fine but the return was slow. A dash4 hose cured it.
