Clutch Basket Repair

I seem to be having a run of breaking things lately. The pto clutch on my Merlo went belly up yesterday. I have just stripped it down and initially thought I had got away with a set of frictions plates and a couple of bearings, no such luck, on closer inspection the clutch basket is cracked. I have just been quoted £500 for a replacement. Now, before I go and make myself cry do you think welding the cracks up and cleaning them up with the lathe is a viable option. I am not sure what the metal is, I suspect it is SS not sure how to check without leaving it for a few days to see if it rusts.

Doubt whether it is stainless, but one way to test is that the majority of stainless is non magnetic.

Ask yourself how much it will cost, if/when it lets go, after welding. £500 will seem like a good deal

That is fubar'd mate! even if you did weld it and put it back in its not going to be long before bad things happen and cost a damn site more

A drop of lemon juice will show if its carbon vs stainless, carbon will start oxidising almost straightaway although this won't indicate what grade of steel it is.

Thanks for the input chaps, I somehow suspected the NAYs would have it. Oh well, time to dig deep
