I think North Africa getting very dry is because of Everest and the rest of the Himalayas getting higher due to tectonic action.There was a documentary on it, the answer was quite complicated. Can't remember the outcome. It'll be on Youtube somewhere.
It act as a water shed so gets all the rain that the Sahara would have got
