.Used to have braided outer 6.35mm jack to 6.35mm jack cables for guitar gear and synths. They soaked up too much beer and sweat so dumped then for regular cables.

What about Kevlar or Nomex rope? I assume this is what hot air balloons use?Nylon rope and sparks, might be a little

The leads on decent telephone test butts still come fabric covered, it stops them twisting and becoming tangled while still remaining flexible.

We use quite a lot of the expanding 'fish net' cable covers bringing av cables out of floor boxes and into racks / lecterns, it melts at a similar temperature to that which heat shrink shrinks. We tend to securely cable tie the ends with a little spare 'fish net' then push the 'fish net' forward over the cable ties and finish off with just one thin tie that way the cut ends of the 'fish net' are both hidden and prevented from fraying, you could always melt the ends to stop the fraying but waving a lighter around in equipment rooms is fround on these days.

Yes we use that sort of thing to bring a few cables up to a table top pop up but when you are talking about a two 12 screen Dexons driving a 7M wide Christie video cube wall with redundance on every cable that is a lot of cable to bring into a 6 foot high rack.
These days many sites use distributed video processing over cat6 or Wifi, which is fine for a retail outlet but a big no no for more er. secure locations.
Out of sight out of mind............ never the case, we got called back to one site to align every screw head in the rack before the invoice was passed for payment, we ues a lot of TX or alan head screws now.

fabric on cables in a workshop, no thanks. just think how much abrasive grit from grinding and cutting will get caught up in that.

I would not cut and remake the LV cable I have enough trouble with broken laptop power leads, far better to just plug in a longer mains lead.

Fiddly stuff and it needs to be hotter than normal to burn off whatever varnish before it solders well. It's not that it's difficult to solder it's just that it breaks after the joint easily on high flex cables like yours. By all means go for it mate, you may well have better success than me as it's been a few years since I did one.

I've soldered it many times. Remove the coloured varnish with a stanley blade by fanning it out slightly on a flat surface and gently scraping it with the blade leaning back. If you push too hard it will tear the fine conductors. Support the joint with a healthy length of shrink-sleeving.
