Clear glass for weld mask question

The clear glass in my welding helmet soon gets covered in spatter,and since I have quite a bit of clear glazing glass lying about doing nothing I figured that I could just cut my own instead of buying it in little rectangles from the welding shop.
Is there anything special about the "proper" clear glass,or can I just use any clear glass in the front of my mask?

Is your glass? Very posh! Mine have always been plastic. I suppose the plastic reduced the risk of glass breaking when you chuck the helmet back into the corner.

Also I'd guess plastic will help if there are any unexpected impacts while you weld. It'll protect the darkened glass. I'd be inclined to go that way.

Should there not be an outer plastic (polycarbonate i think) cover lense?

It's just a fairly basic mask,not one of those fancy-pants automatic masks.
It's fitted with a blue glass lens,with a clear glass lens on the outside to keep the spatter off the blue lens (no plastic lenses).

it should be a plastic cover infront. glass covers get covered in spatter too easily while for some reason the spatter does not stick to plastic as much

They all used to be glass front covers with black shade glass lenes behind, In the dark days when welders were steam powered, etc etc, Il have you know chaps, I think Iv got some clears and some black shade fillters kicking around in a draw somewere, If I have your welcome to em mick, PM me your adress and il post em to you....

Yea they were all glass, when I used to build dipper arms for Hymac diggers, the lenses got so hot they would shatter in front of your eyes, dont remember steam powered welders though,

Think I've got some too, I've definitely got some dark ones lying around. I'll sort out what I've got and if anyone wants them they can have them .

Me too! Glass cover lens and glass blackuns.
Weird how the spatter would stick to the glass but not to plastic.
Used to go through a lot of lenses when the mask got thrown down when something went wrong. Now with a screen in them worth nearly 200 quid - always very carefully put down!
Worked with a pipe welded who said try my shield its got a magnifying lens in it. Thought he was pulling my leg till i tried it - made a 3.25 rod look like a 6mm-er.

If yopu want any more lenses - you can have mine!

Nothing wrong with 'cheater' magnifying lenses, wait till you get nearer 60 you may need one too! There is an upside, no one borrows your screen. W/A

Hehe, I'm nearing 40 and could do with one already .
Have to say, my eyesight is pretty good, I've just got a habit of getting up close and personal when I'm welding hence my cover lens plopping out and landing on my workpiece once when I was trying loads of different rods out one after the other

I've seen clear glass in front of the dark lens with polycarbonate behind it.

I'm still using glass fronts and tints. Not too many left now and when they're gone i'll treat meself to an auto.
