Clear coat haze...

Hi all,

I don't often post on here, mostly just read for tips/advice. Anyhow after recently changing a front wing on my track car for an MOT, I decided to paint it the right colour. However after applying 3 clear coats it now has a dull haze to it. Pics below.

It had 3 coats of primer which was wet sanded with 2000grit. It then had 2 coats of base which were then wet sanded again with 2000grit, then another 2 coats of base. Then after 3 coats of clear what you see below is the final product. I haven't tried anything on it yet as from the limited reading i have done you need to let it cure fully before going nuts with any cutting/polishing compounds.

Can anyone advise what the best steps to take here will be?

Looks like the clear has been put on too dry and needs cutting back once dry. By the way, you may get inter coat adhesion problems with your flatting method. Flat the primer no finer than 800(wet) grit then build up your colour coats without flatting and clear within an hour at least with fairly heavy/double coats.

is it rattle can or 1k stuff through a gun ? if so often does that it wont shine like 2k straight from the gun

2000 is way too fine for primer , and never sand the base coat

Thanks for the replies. There was soooo much conflicting info on the internet about flatting etc. I did read about not flatting a base but i cocked up slightly which left a tiny run, so i flat that back and gave it a couple more coats to cover it up.

This was all done using rattle cans so not the best quality, and to be honest as its only a track car, i am not overly fussed, though it would be nice to get a bit more shine to the paint than it currently has.

Hear what you are saying about the adhesion though. The layers seem to have bonded ok, but i guess only time will tell...

So what are my options now? Should i wet sand the clear, or should i hit it with cutting compounds and polishes? I found even the 2000grit when wet sand (with plenty of water) left lots of fine scratches. Or should i wet sand it then use a cutting compounds after that?

if its not mega peely just go with buffing , something mild should bring up a bit of shine , but rattle can wont look as nice as factory paint

Ok thanks, its definitely not peely like you see on some factory jobs, more hazy like the clear coat had a heavy night on the rum. Will give buffing a try. I don't expect it to be perfect, just a little less flat looking.

I have on occasion produced a far too good result with rattle cans - too flat compared to the original. Says more about the quality finish on some factory coats on some cars TBH.
