Cleaning Devilbiss JGA-54 5 Spray Gun

Picked one of these up relatively cheaply last week.

Visually, its OK, and passes gun wash, air, water, etc, etc.

Quite a bit of paint dried in the cup though, and splashed up the outside of the gun itself.

Would something along the lines of Caustic Soda work, or would this rot the Aluminium (I assume its alu, being so light)?

dunk it in celly thinners for a couple of days might shift it then scrub it

Be careful of soaking it in thinners as it can damage the o-ring seals. You could put it in a sealed container with a bowl of thinners as the fumes will soften most paints. An empty comma manista container works well.

yeah i would soak the gun body in thinners , but you can take it apart and put all the bits in

Strip it and use paint stripper if thinners won't do it.
I cleaned the outside of guns pretty rarely. so when I flogged my JGAs off, I had some with 20 year old 2k on. Here's one that's been cleaned with stripper.

Let us know how it sprays when you stick some paint through it. I've got one of my dad's old place but never got it to spray nicely.
It pulses occasionally, guess it needs a full strip down and clean.

Is the fluid tip tight?

If its pulsing double check the packing on the fluid needle, either tighten the nut, or strip repack with vasaline.-- very popular fault but an easy cure. + make sure the fuid tip is tight.

Back in the Day when I was painting race cars for a living with JGA`s
We used to just run thinners through them after every use then once a week, strip them completely and clean in paint stripper.
The Guns always looked immaculate after, but all week world be all different colours Normally Leyton House Blue, Camel Yellow, Minolta Blue lol !!

Fabulous guns but you need a Big Compressor (14CFM FAD minimum) to run them properly

nitric acid is what you need, just make sure no steel or stainless steel parts are attached.
it will dissolve the paint but wont hurt aluminium at all. so if your gun is ally then nitric acid will clean it.

You can't buy Nitric Acid now, unless you have the correct licences to purchase and hold/store it.

bloody hell, it was easy to get back in the summer, I bet that is something the m&*^%ms use to mess about with in their rucksacks.
now what am I going to use to clean out my outboard engines Grrrrrrrrrrr
