Eureka, the taper did it one whack with a mallet tonight and popped off after another nights release oil treatment. release oil and surfaces were orangy brown but wiped off clean. Think was gummed up from being fitted and not removed for decades.
Nooo! A tap should be sufficient or choose a better method. The two wedge approach is the one I use on my mills. Never yet failed. I have two sets of wedges (thick and thinner) and occasionally need extra flat spacers. The wedges need a small hole in each so they can be connected together by some form of lanyard - or one wedge will often be dropped. Dropped them too often!
Some of the Clarksons have a collar that can be screwed up to provide even downwards force (not sure if that one is like that as I rarely use my Clarkson. A single wedge, on one side, is not a good idea.
Apart from being done up too tight with the drawbar, there should be little problem with removal - but one issue is often over-looked by many.
That is fitting a cold arbor into a warm socket. It can be a quite effective shrink fit!
That, and over tightening, are the two main issues, I think.
