Clarke Pillar drill overhaul

Hi Guys,

I recently got hold of a Clarke floor standing pillar drill with the intention of giving it a bit of an overhaul and seem to have fallen at the first hurdle, I can't get the front pulley off!



I have tried a puller on it though didn't go daft with it in case that wasn't the way ahead.

Any ideas chaps?

Pulleys often have two back-to-back grub screws. Is there a keyway?

Just checked mine.

Second one up from bottom was a M6 Grub screw.
Under a plastic bung.

Hi Kram, not that I can see. Though there is a woodruff on the rear pulley, the on the motor.

Hi TYA, the rear one has a grub screw (actually it doesn't, it's missing - but it should have one!) but not the front one.

I've just put the puller on it, tightened it up and then heated the pulley to the point that I couldn't touch it and still nothing.

Does any one know if this is on some sort of spline/keyway, press fit or even threaded?

if you cant see the keyway on the shaft or end of pulley then it could be threaded..

I did contact Sealey and they sent me a manual but unfortunately it doesn't give any info on that level of disassembly.

Mine is about 25 - 30 years old and is a model GDM200A 12 F, sadly not listed on their website.

Appreciate the info though.

The Far East machines are very generic. Only the paint colour and the stickers vary. The reason I suggested Sealey is that they and Clarke do seem to have good manuals and spare parts available, which is reflected in the original selling price. This is unlike the cheaper sellers, for example, Warco, Chester, possibly Axminster.

It seems so. The kit is all the same, but Clarke don't mind sharing all their info online. Slightly better quality print too

Have you tried unscrewing it?

I've had a try but it's quite tricky to grip a pulley that's on bearings and trying really hard to spin!

Update: I dropped Sealey another email this morning and they have just come back to me to tell me it is on a tapered shaft. So penetrant, blow lamp and puller at the ready!

Mix nail varnish remover and a light oil.

If it like the one in a MIS it may have a locktite glue on it.
The nail varnish remover will soften it.

Well, it's off!

Penetrant, puller, a bit (quite a bit) of heat and a sharp tap with a small hammer and it popped off.

Hi Guys,

An update on my Clarke (actually, it is a Sealey - seems I can't even read the most obvious signs, like the one on the front!) pillar drill.

I got it down to it's component parts...



...managed to get replacement bearings (now fitted), drive belts (waiting to be fitted) and a new switch (on its way from China, probably!).

Having now cleaned everything and about to put a coat of paint on the showy bits, I have a question. Well two actually.

Firstly, what's the chances of getting hold of a replacement bed thing? Mine has a big hole in it...



...and whilst not the end of the world, I would like to change it. It is 305mm in diameter and the spigot underneath is 47mm.

Secondly, the foot has two slots...



...that have clearly been machined for a purpose. Anyone know what?

Probably cheaper to get a disk of 6mm plate cut out and fix it on top
