Woiuld not have one as a gift, they lack ridgitity and only have limited movement as a milling machine.

I have seen one sell for quite a bit more.£750 recently
its an entry level tool that's just under £1000 new

there isnt such thing as an entry level lathe or miller 
theres cheap ones expensive ones and large or small. once u have mastered one of any size there all the same 
if u can turn out decent jobs on a crap cheap lathe u can work wonders on a decent one

They're awful; I've had a fiddle with one in a MachineMart and everything fits where it touches, the finish of machined surfaces is rougher than a badger's bum and as noted the speeds are sub-optimal. You could spend the same again sorting these things but it would still be a mediocre machine and the money could buy you far better gear.
I had the Warco version. It's a decent little lathe, a touch speedy for short single point thread cutting (I used to setup, then do the cuts by hand) OK drill press, fairly crap as a mill ( the spindle is miles from the table). I did a lot of work on mine build stuff for motorcycles, and would have one again if it was cheap enough, just for use on small stuff. I moved up to a Colchester student because I needed more power and more capacity. £500 isn't bad, especially if you get some accessories with it, and you don't need to shift half a tonne or more of cast iron to get it into place, two blokes can lift it.

i bought one of these new from MM.
it arrived damaged, and after waiting ages for a replacement column.
i decided to send it back for a refund and got the CL430 instead.
and a stand alone mill machine.
as said above, there wasn't much room for milling due to the headstock in the way.
i know the cl430 isn't as good and many other lathes out there.
but it does me for now and is a fair size...
when space is an issue you have to choose wisely
also the pain of swapping from lathe to mill and then back to lathe etc.
was a headache....
back when i bought them i think the lathe was around £400 and the stand alone mill was £600.

I do agree with buying a better one, they are available but its all down to the budget and space.
I have a Sherline lathe, loads of people told me don't buy it, but most of them had never owned one, I paid £160 with chucks and tooling, ok its small but it does every thing I need, I can lift it on my own, its aluminium with only the main bed being cast, it even has a variable speed drive but its tiny.
Have a good think about what you will be using it for and consider the space you have to use, mine was to teach our son and he wants to make a few small bits and bobs so its ideal, I also have access to a Big lathe should I need it. Remember a bargain is no use unless its exactly what you need

Sherlines are good bits of kit for their size and if you don't have a workshop it might be the only way of owning a lathe. When the only nice thing to be said about a machine tool is that it's cheap(and not that cheap) it's best avoided.

couldnt agree more..
i would of loved to have got a good lathe and mill..... but Space is the issue.
my first use of a metal lathe was at school, on a big machine.
never did get a go on the milling machine as the list for that was a mile long.
and space is a big issue for me currently, i didn't even get the suds tray/stand they sell for the CL430
as i wanted to mount it ontop of the long bench i have in the garage.
so i made my own suds tray for it.
yes it has a fair amount of blacklash in the screws. but i could if needed fit ballscrews to sort that.
i could even CNC it.
but i plan to either make a CNC table for a plasma or CNC the mill/drill first.
the big issue for me is memory, remembering things....
and also will be learning how to use the drawing programs and mac3.....
pointless converting a machine to cnc or building a cnc table,
only to be unable to use it due to not being able to get your head around the programs.

If you want it make sure you can get spares for it!
Ring them up and ask for a new half nut or lead screw first, see if they have any in stock.
I've got a Chester lathe and have a real problem getting parts for it. It don't bode well for the future if I break it!
